Black Zetsu hadn't expected Gensou to act so swiftly, so accurately, and in such an unexpected manner.

In a single move, he had struck at Akatsuki's core.

Now, Nagato, the man behind Pain, and Konan's lives were uncertain; the Rinnegan and the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path had likely changed hands; and Kisame, Sasori, and others seemed to have been attacked, disappearing without a trace.

The mighty Akatsuki, known for capturing tailed beasts and feared by the great ninja villages, had been reduced to an empty shell almost overnight.

All that remained were Black Zetsu and Obito.

Back to square one.

Obito's current predicament perfectly illustrated this phrase.

Black Zetsu couldn't help but consider abandoning ship.

But on second thought, his current cover was as the embodiment of Madara's will. If he left Obito, it would expose his identity.

Besides, it was unlikely that Gensou would accept someone of his obscure origins.

So, Black Zetsu decided to stick with Obito for the time being.

After working together for so many years, he knew how deeply Obito believed in the Moon's Eye Plan.

Although Gensou had shown his hand and had been impressive, Black Zetsu had reservations.

Having hidden for a thousand years, he wasn't about to trust someone so quickly.

Unlike Madara and Obito, Black Zetsu couldn't be certain that Gensou would wholeheartedly support the Moon's Eye Plan.

"Let's wait and see. If necessary, I still have my trump card."

Black Zetsu thought about the secret burial site of Madara that only he knew and felt reassured.

He turned his attention to Obito, whose expression shifted from confusion to a dark fury.

Concerned that Obito might rush to his death meaninglessly, Black Zetsu quickly spoke up:

"Lord Madara… I mean, Lord Madara left me with additional measures before he passed. Obito, don't lose heart; we still have a chance…"

The battle outside Mount Katsuragi had indeed stirred the shinobi world.

After securing the Rinnegan and the Demonic Statue, and uprooting Akatsuki entirely to repurpose it under his control, Gensou paid no heed to the external commotion.

After extracting the Five-Tails and Six-Tails, he didn't immediately proceed with the next phase of the tailed beast capture plan.

Uchiha Izumi, Uchiha Zetsu, Kisame, Sasori, and Kakuzu had all endured intense battles and multiple tailed beast extractions, leaving them exhausted and in need of recovery.

Thus, Gensou led them back to Jomae Village.

To be cautious, he didn't bring the newly recruited Kisame, Sasori, and Kakuzu into the village; instead, he stationed them at a hidden intelligence base within the Land of Fire, not far from the Land of Waves, to recuperate.

As for Hotaru, Tonbee, and Utakata, who had nowhere else to go and had chosen to follow, he allowed them into the village.

Unlike Kisame and the others, who still had missions awaiting them, these three would not be leaving the village anytime soon.

"There really is a city in the sky! It's so beautiful! So magnificent!"

Stepping out into the world for the first time and still feeling a bit nervous, Hotaru couldn't contain her excitement upon seeing Jomae Village in the sky, her eyes wide and mouth agape.

"So, I'll be living in this city?"

It was her first time living among so many people, especially in a city floating above the clouds.

It reminded her of the fantastical stories she had read as a child.

Her initial anxiety dissipated, her face now filled with joy and anticipation.

Beside her, Tonbee and Utakata were just as awestruck as she was. After answering a few of Hotaru's questions, Gensou signaled for Hanare to assist them in settling in.

He himself sent a shadow clone to the office to handle some matters.

The original body, however, carried Hidan's head and body to the research base for study.

As a considerate leader, Gensou understood the dedication and ambition of his employees.

So, instead of resting upon his return, he immediately began scientific research to ensure Hidan, the new addition to his team, could return to work and fulfill his potential.

"Boss! Boss! Slow down! Really! No rush! I can wait longer!"

With his head now removed from Izumi's waist and placed in Gensou's hand upon reaching Jomae Village, Hidan, having lost his blindfold, watched door after door, each inscribed with sealing techniques, open before him.

Disinfection, deodorization, sterilization—all kinds of white sprays covered his body multiple times.

Then he saw a variety of unfamiliar but clearly ominous instruments spring to life before him.

He even recognized several White Zetsu clones submerged in nutrient tanks, giving off an eerie vibe.

Despite his usual fearlessness, Hidan, with his immortal body, finally panicked, begging his new boss that he could wait as long as needed.

Though Hidan's concern was appreciated, Gensou would shoulder the responsibility regardless.

Placing Hidan's head and body on the operating table, Gensou simply told him to "stay calm" before getting to work.

Two hours later.

With his research into Hidan's immortality complete, Gensou glanced at Hidan, whose screams had subsided, his gaze now vacant. He then focused on the report summarizing his findings.

"Blood, bones, organs, brain—everything's just like an ordinary human's. When injured, he still bleeds, his bones break, and his organs get damaged. However, a strange energy, different from chakra, sustains his life force. Additionally, his healing rate far surpasses that of ordinary people. There's one prerequisite, though—he needs to consume a lot of nutrients, which means he has to eat a lot."

Having read the report, Gensou gained a thorough understanding of Hidan's immortality.

While he understood it, replicating the immortality technique itself proved elusive.

Just as the Moon's Eye Plan required the Rinnegan, gaining immortality would require the being Hidan worshipped—the so-called "Jashin."

"A being similar to the Grim Reaper, perhaps?"

Gensou's curiosity piqued, he walked over to Hidan, tapped him on the forehead, and said:

"Hidan, stop pretending. Preach to me."

"Preach?"

Hidan's vacant eyes suddenly sharpened.

Gensou was terrifying.

Despite the countless agonies he'd endured over the years, the so-called "scientific research" he'd just undergone was a whole new level of torture, beyond his wildest nightmares.

Whoever said Jashinists were insane?

Hidan thought Gensou and his kind—scientists—were the real madmen!

Yet, his eyes gleamed at the mention of preaching.

Preaching!

Yes, preaching!

If Gensou joined the Jashin Cult, bound by its rules…

As the current leader of the Jashin Cult, Hidan would personally ensure that Gensou paid dearly!

So, without waiting for Gensou to prompt him further, Hidan launched into an impassioned sermon, expounding on the teachings of Jashin with all the fervor he could muster.

บท 223: Chapter 224

The Jashin Cult's doctrine was simple: slaughter.

Endless slaughter.

Kill your family, kill your friends, kill your neighbors—kill anyone you desire.

The suffering of the world would be best alleviated early.

Followers of the Jashin Cult were to empathize with the pain of others, to transfer that pain to themselves, relieving others of it and thus granting salvation.

Thus, slaughter was salvation.

Hidan enthusiastically explained the Jashin Cult's beliefs, in which he had unwavering faith.

This was exactly what he did.

After achieving immortality, he wielded his scythe and slaughtered every Jashin Cult member present, enacting the cult's teachings.

After each kill, he would lie in the cursed ritual circle for half an hour, performing complex prayers, even if Kakuzu repeatedly told him to skip steps and finish faster. Hidan never agreed, as that would be blasphemy.

Gensou, however, listened to Hidan's lecture on Jashin's doctrine with indifference, filtering it out.

The concept of "salvation through slaughter" was nothing more than a guise for offering blood sacrifices to the Jashin.

He urged Hidan to skip the preaching and proceed directly to how to join the cult and gain Jashin's power.

Hidan felt a bit slighted, but seeing Gensou's expressionless face, he conceded.

Soon, following Hidan's instructions, Gensou used an Earth Release jutsu to mold a statue of Jashin.

"We'll need a blood sacrifice next." Hidan looked expectantly at Gensou.

Without a word, Gensou took a knife to Hidan's chest, now reattached to his body.

Blood gushed onto the Jashin statue.

"Is that enough?"

Gensou said he could add another cut if needed.

"It's enough!! More than enough!" Hidan, unwilling to provoke Gensou, quickly began the summoning ritual.

After a ritual dance incomprehensible to Gensou, Hidan held up the Jashin necklace around his neck and proclaimed loudly:

"Lord Jashin! Please descend into this world and guide a new follower!"

Technically speaking, Hidan was only partially initiated. The true higher-ups of the Jashin Cult, knowledgeable in its rituals and prayers, had all been slaughtered by Hidan himself, leaving no one to teach him further.

Although he'd improvised both the ritual and the prayer, Hidan was nonetheless favored by Jashin as the only immortal devotee.

And indeed, under his heartfelt prayer, the ordinary statue of Jashin suddenly began to emit an eerie light.

"The god has descended!"

At that moment, Hidan puffed up his chest, feeling vindicated, and glanced at Gensou, waiting for a moment to boast.

Suddenly—

A sharp pain hit the back of his head, and he blacked out.

"You didn't even introduce me to the god!" he thought in confusion and indignation before losing consciousness.

Gensou's shadow clone appeared behind Hidan, his Rinnegan detecting the presence of a spatial rift opening at the statue, releasing Jashin's aura into the statue.

The entity also seemed to sense something amiss, slowing its descent even before Hidan passed out.

Knowing that waiting further could ruin the plan, Gensou decisively had his clone knock Hidan unconscious, then stretched out his right hand toward the rift:

"Bansho Ten'in!"

A powerful force of attraction burst from Gensou's clone's hand.

This high-level Rinnegan technique, as long as a rift existed, could pull even beings from other dimensions.

"Roar!!"

Sensing impending doom, the entity known as Jashin struggled desperately against Bansho Ten'in.

But it was futile.

As Gensou channeled more chakra into his clone, the force of Bansho Ten'in grew stronger.

Soon—

With a roar of unwilling rage, Jashin was dragged from the rift into the shinobi world.

Gensou surveyed the entity; its appearance matched the statue he had just molded, though it lacked a physical body.

Having seen the Grim Reaper before, he wasn't surprised.

After all, the shinobi world had many strange spirits in the past.

After the Six Paths Sage's cleansing, entities that had physical forms and couldn't revive like tailed beasts were nearly wiped out.

The few remaining ones that survived now existed as spirit-like beings in alternate dimensions, like Jashin.

At this moment—

Jashin, who had been comfortably seated in his domain, occasionally enjoying sacrifices from his followers, was forcibly pulled into the shinobi world. He looked at Gensou, the culprit behind it all, with fury.

"How dare you defy a god!"

Jashin could speak, but Gensou's response was two words:

"Fool."

Stay a god for long enough, and you might actually believe it.

Before Jashin could attack, Gensou clapped his hands together.

Instantly—

Around Jashin, a ten-meter-wide area lit up with a dense array of sealing symbols.

Jashin, ready to tear Gensou apart, felt an intense fluctuation in his emotions and attempted to flee, but it was too late.

Black, tadpole-shaped sealing symbols rose and formed a tight barrier, sealing Jashin firmly inside.

At Gensou's command, the sealing array closed in, forcing Jashin to curl up, his form compressed inward.

Finally, the seal shrank into a small, fist-sized orb, trapping the now-tiny Jashin inside.

Gensou walked up, holding the seal orb, and looked at the struggling Jashin within. He smiled faintly and said:

"Jashin, captured."

Gensou had prepared extensively for Jashin's summoning.

This was his stronghold, already equipped with various sealing arrays powerful enough to restrain even tailed beasts, let alone a spirit like Jashin.

"Now, time to conduct some proper research."

As Jashin showed a similar look of unease to Hidan, Gensou began his examination.

It's unclear how much time passed.

When Hidan regained consciousness, he felt a chill down his spine.

That was from lying on the floor for too long.

"Honestly, couldn't they have put me somewhere more comfortable?"

Hidan muttered as he slowly sat up, rubbing the back of his head and looking around.

Soon, he spotted Gensou, who was squeezing and twisting something in his hand—a wailing, pleading Jashin.

"Huh? Am I seeing things?"

Hidan rubbed his eyes vigorously and looked again.

"Maybe my brain isn't fully awake yet."

He waited a bit longer before looking a third time with a solemn expression.

Then—

"It really is Lord Jashin!"

In that instant, Hidan's faith crumbled.
