บท 21: getting married {edited}

After the two went back into the living room, holding hands with a ring gleaming on Vesna's hand, everything went into a frenzy. The Xiao were exclaiming with happiness though they still cast suspicious glances towards Vesna, while old Madam Luo was too over the moon to care about anything. After all, the grandson she had thought would die single suddenly had a woman by his side. In her eyes, this was nothing short of a miracle.

That was four days ago and Vesna was currently sitting cross-legged on the floor of her apartment, surrounded by a veritable mountain of files and documents to even think about her upcoming wedding.

She has been sitting on the floor for three hours now, immersed in the chaotic sea of paperwork that seemed to expand with each passing minute. She was dressed in comfortable loungewear, her hair was pulled back in a messy bun, stray strands falling around her face.

Suddenly, there she heard the doorbell of her apartment. She raised her head for a second, wondering who it might be before she turned her attention back to the file at her. She never had visitors anyway. A minute later, the bell rang again. This time, she stood up, stretching her arms as she made her way towards the door. She looked at the intercom and her eyebrow raised when she saw Ziyan standing there. He was about to ring the bell again but she opened the rood. Ziyan hand paused and his head tilted in her direction.

"Did I come at the wrong time?" he questioned.

Vesna shrugged nonchalantly, stepping aside to let him in. "Come in," she said, not bothering to ask why he was there.

Ziyan followed her inside, his cane tapping lightly against the floor as she led him to the living room couch. He eyed the files on the floor but since he was supposed to be 'blind', he remained silent about it, maintaining his facade.

"I'll get you something to drink," Vesna said, disappearing into the kitchen. She returned moments later with a can of beer - the only beverage she had in her fridge. She'd been too busy (or perhaps just too lazy) to make some coffee.

Handing him the can, she settled back down on the floor, picking up the file she'd been examining earlier.

"So, what brought you here today?" she asked, her tone casual and slightly distracted.

Ziyan set the can of beer aside, his expression a mixture of amusement and mild exasperation. "We're supposed to get married today," he said matter-of-factly.

Vesna paused, looking up from her file with a startled expression. "We were?" she asked, confusion evident in her voice.

"It's the fifteenth," Ziyan told her.

Frowning slightly, Vesna reached for her phone. Sure enough, there was a reminder flashing on the screen: 'Getting married'. Since she had put the phone on silent mode earlier, she hadn't heard any of the alerts. Vesna's eyes widened in surprise.

"Oh, shit," she said, a rare hint of embarrassment coloring her voice. She immediately stood up, papers scattering around her feet. "Just... just give me a moment to get ready."

Ziyan nodded, his lips twitching with barely suppressed laughter. "Take your time."

Vesna darted towards her bedroom, calling over her shoulder, "Make yourself comfortable. I'll be as quick as I can."

Ziyan nodded, an amused smile playing on his lips as he listened to Vesna's hurried footsteps heading towards what he assumed was the bedroom. The door closed with a soft thud, leaving him alone in the living room.

Ziyan chuckled softly as he heard the bedroom door close behind Vesna. Once alone, his gaze turned toward the scattered files on the floor with curiosity.

He was tempted to reach out and examine them, especially after noticing the Kairos logo on the cover of several black leather files.

The sheer volume of confidential files in Vesna's possession suggested she held a significant position within the organization. After all, Kairos was renowned for its specialization in security, and it was highly unlikely for an employee to be allowed to take so many files home.

For a moment, Ziyan was tempted to look through a file but he restrained himself, leaning back on the couch and closing his eyes instead. When Vesna wanted to tell him, she would tell him herself.

In the bedroom, Vesna was a flurry of activity. She quickly shed her comfortable loungewear, replacing it with a simple yet elegant white dress she had thankfully prepared in advance. Her fingers worked swiftly to undo her messy bun, letting her hair cascade down her back in soft waves.

As she applied a light touch of makeup, Vesna's mind raced. How could she have forgotten about her own wedding day? She, who prided always herself on her memory actually forgot the day she was going to get married. It was almost laughable, if it wasn't so mortifying.

After what seemed like an eternity but was probably only about twenty minutes, Vesna emerged from the bedroom. She found Ziyan exactly where she had left him, sitting patiently on the couch. If he had moved at all during her absence, there was no sign of it.

"I'm ready," she announced, a hint of breathlessness in her voice.

Ziyan turned towards her voice, a small smile playing on his lips. "Shall we go then, future Mrs. Luo?" he asked, standing up and extending his hand towards her.
