Late in the evening, after glancing at Emily, who was sleeping soundly, Klaus got up quietly and left the bedroom swiftly.
A floor below, Klaus walked up to Marx's room and rang the bell, which echoed loudly in the silence of the night.
Presently, Marx appeared behind the door in a white T-shirt, his eyes bright and alert, with a clarity that was distinct from sleepiness.
"You haven't slept yet?" There was a hint of surprise in Klaus's voice.
"Aren't you?" Marx glanced at the bottle in Klaus's hand and didn't seem surprised by the late-night visit. "You want me to drink with you?"
"Let's go inside."
Klaus opened the whiskey in his hand, poured the amber liquid into two crystal-clear glasses, and handed one to Marx. The two men sat on the terrace, and the moonlight bathing them lent a serene ambiance to their conversation.
