Time seemed to slow to an excruciating crawl as Daniel held the gun, his eyes wild with fury. Zaya and I were frozen, every second stretching into an eternity. Daniel's grip on the gun tightened, and he barked orders at his men, who had already started retreating. "You two, get up! Take them!"

They hesitated, glancing at each other and then at the gun in Daniel's hand. The situation was complicated; Daniel's desperation had driven him to a dangerous edge. I could feel my heart pounding in my chest, every beat echoing in my ears. I knew I had to think fast if we were to get out of this alive.

"Daniel, please," I said, my voice trembling. "Just let us go."

"Shut up!" he roared, pointing the gun at me. "You don't get to tell me what to do! Not after everything you've done!"
