บท 17: Rommel and Hitler

He indicated a target, a tree which had already been half blasted away by artillery fire.

Guo Yunfeng, with boldness, took out the dagger, aimed slightly, then with a flick of his hand, the dagger "whooshed" out.

Looking again, the dagger struck the tree trunk dead center.

The German soldiers watched, somewhat bewildered.

"Well done," Wang Wei-yu nodded in satisfaction. "Since you can't return home for the time being, stay with us. I'll find a way to send you back when the war ends."

Guo Yunfeng said nothing, just nodded silently.

Yet, Wang Wei-yu felt a certain warmth in his heart. He was, after all, a true Chinese, despite having Ernst Brehm as a cover. No one could deny his essence as a Chinese person.

Encountering a fellow countryman, sharing the same blood, in this foreign land where he had no kin, brought about emotions that outsiders couldn't understand.

Of course, to the German soldiers, Guo Yunfeng, who couldn't speak German, was undoubtedly an anomaly...

"Lieutenant Ernst, congratulations on achieving such a miracle," Rommel, who witnessed everything, came up to him and sincerely expressed his congratulations.

Truth be told, Rommel never believed battles could be fought this way. Previously, he was a brave and steadfast, yet extremely meticulous, German officer.

During the miracle at Borei Village, when German soldiers were clearing the village of civilians and the corpses of cattle and horses engulfed in the flames of war, some of Rommel's comrades were killed, which left him quite disheartened.

However, now he witnessed a battle that he had never imagined before. Some of his previous thoughts began to change.

"We don't have to rigidly adhere to tactics, or blindly follow orders from superiors," Wang Wei-yu said lightly. "When a situation arises on the battlefield that favors you, as a commander, you should take the initiative. You don't even have to notify your superiors."

Rommel nodded thoughtfully.

Executing a command without informing superiors was simply unthinkable to German officers.

Wang Wei-yu smiled. When Rommel became a general in the future, how many times did he refuse to execute orders from superiors, or even change the battle plan at the last minute, despite countless discussions beforehand?

"Lieutenant Ernst, the soldiers of the Third Company have shown exceptional bravery and discipline, except for one person," Rommel, straightforwardly, continued, "Adolf Hitler, Junior Sergeant."

At this moment, Adolf Hitler was nearby, but Rommel, straightforward as he was, never hid his likes or dislikes in front of anyone. "Junior Sergeant Adolf Hitler, although you've tried your best to become a true German soldier, your performance on the battlefield suggests otherwise. You're not suitable for this profession."

Wang Wei-yu didn't expect Rommel to say such words in front of Adolf Hitler. He wanted to interrupt but felt it would be impolite.

Rommel's face was serious. "Bravery, agility, loyalty, and composure are essential qualities for an excellent German soldier. I have no doubt about your loyalty, Junior Sergeant Adolf. However, agility and composure are beyond your reach. You're too small and your movements are clumsy. When you jumped into the trench, you even stumbled. After getting up, you blindly shot without knowing where your target was..."

Hitler's face flushed red, but facing a lieutenant, and a "hero of Borei Village" at that, he dared not say a word. Rommel continued sternly, "Before an officer finishes speaking, interrupting is a serious lack of manners! If you really think you're brave, you're mistaken! When Mr. Steck was outnumbered three to one, you were by his side, but you didn't help. I personally helped Mr. Steck eliminate an enemy, but what about you? Why didn't you help your comrade, Junior Sergeant Adolf Hitler!"

Hitler opened his mouth, but no words came out.

Indeed, such a situation had just occurred. He had intended to help, but facing the three British soldiers surrounding Steck, who were much larger than him, Hitler hesitated for a moment. And at that moment, Rommel decisively rushed forward to assist Steck in solving the enemy.

"Remember my words: to become an outstanding soldier, you must cast away any hint of timidity in your heart!" Rommel finished sternly. Then he said, "Well, you may leave now!"

"Yes, Lieutenant!" Hitler replied loudly.

"Don't you think you're being too harsh on him?" After Hitler left, Wang Wei-yu tried to ease the atmosphere. "After all, he hasn't been on the battlefield for very long, and what he's accomplished so far is quite impressive."

In fact, he had another thought in his mind. While Rommel currently outranked Hitler by far, in the future, Rommel would become a general under the imperial chancellor. If their relationship deteriorated too much, would it affect Rommel's future?

Impact? When those words surfaced in Wang Wei-yu's mind, he was greatly disturbed. Could it be that just because he, someone who didn't belong to this era, appeared, he was influencing some aspects of history?

Rommel, however, suddenly smiled. "Lieutenant Ernst, I actually quite admire Mr. Adolf. Despite his small stature, he makes an effort to suppress his fear. This already fulfills the prerequisite for becoming an outstanding soldier. But we must spur him on to accelerate his growth."

My Field Marshal Rommel!

Wang Wei-yu couldn't help but feel a mix of emotions. Admiring someone doesn't necessarily require this kind of method, right? Obviously, Hitler didn't take well to this kind of encouragement. He must have felt deeply insulted.

If such resentment accumulated in his heart, who knows what would happen in the future.

But Rommel didn't pay attention to these thoughts. "Lieutenant Ernst, you've captured this position, and retaliation from the British will come soon. But rest assured, I will do everything I can to support you!"

"Thank you, Lieutenant Erwin," Wang Wei-yu said very seriously.
