The so-called Food Ghosts are the Yin Souls of certain deceased wild beasts. Because these beasts had previously reincarnated from human Yin Souls, it led to a rare few having their lower bodies as beasts and their upper bodies as humans after death; these half-beast, half-human Yin Souls are known as Food Ghosts. They think like humans but also possess the carnivorous nature of wild beasts.
