A few seconds of silence after the door closes. Mom puts her arms around them, her endowed chest basically seperating the two.
MOM: "OK you two now that the commotion has settled let's all get back to bed. Who knows he might be back by the time you wake up."
She is behind the kids as they walk up and she follows them through the hallway to their adjacent rooms.
MOM: "Katsu you head in and get back into bed. I'll be there in a minute. I just want to talk to Shelly."
Katsu walks into his room. His window is open and there in a thin coat of snow on his window. He walks over and closes the window. As he closes it he sees a bird and its eggs. He watches them for a minute.
KATSU: "Poor momma bird. Her eggs won't hatch if it snows."
MOM (O.S): "And what will happen to momma human when her little egg gets sick from the cold."
Katsu turns around and she is in the doorway. Mom hands him pajama pants and a long sleeve shirt. Katsu puts them on then hops into bed. His mom walks over, sits on the bed, and strokes his head.
KATSU: "Mom can I ask you something?"
MOM: "Sure honey anything."
He thinks for the right words.
KATSU: "Why do we fight other humans? I mean I understand there are bad people but if you kill people who kill people…doesn't it just create more hate for killing? It seems…I don't know."
MOM: "Stupid?"
Katsu looks surprised on his mother's quick response.
MOM: "Katsu I know your father has been teaching you certain things. And I for one believe he's right. No human should go as far to kill another for any reason. Because in the end killing is killing. But some people are COLD. Sometimes its mentally not their fault some kill because mentally they're still animals. We all are. You know how you eat like a little pig at dinner? *Boops his nose gently*
KATSU: "Come on mom. I'm not a little boy anymore. You can talk to me in a more mature way. You do know what today is right?"
MOM(jokingly): "Huh? I wonder what was it I was supposed to do today? Bills? No. hmmmm"
Katsu rolls over, back facing his mother. His mother laughs, lays down and cuddles him.
MOM: "Happy Birthday my little boy forever. I know he didn't say it because he wanted to get back as soon as possible, but your father wanted me to give you this."
She hands him a wrapped box the size of milk carton. He opens it and inside is a retractable pocket knife with the word Respect engraved into the handle. He looks at it confused he then flicks his wrist the 6in. blade comes out.
MOM: "You have no idea how long it took him to convince me you were mature enough. But he said you have Shelly to look after and she's part of this family too."
KATSU: "Why would Dad give me this? He always told me to never kill."
Mom grabs the blade and pushes the retract button. She puts it on his dresser.
MOM: "Well like I said Katsu sometimes people are too evil to talk things through."
She kisses his forehead and walks over to turn off the light. Before she shuts the door.
MOM: "But Katsu remember this. Most people fall too evil because nobody is there for them. If you know someone who is alone befriend them. Most evil just need someone there to guide them in the right direction. That's why we took in Shelly. She may have her father but his depression is too dire. With her trauma, as well it's our job to steer her in the right direction. Buuut she's seems to have taken a liking to you. *giggles* Good night Katsu, I love you.
DOOR CLOSES TO DARKNESS.
