As Liuliu picked up her pen to write the multiplication table of nine for Gong Dafu, she vividly recalled his harsh critique of her handwriting. In revenge, she stared hard at him, as a warning.
Gong Dafu watched in bafflement as Liuliu picked up her pen to write the multiplication table she had summarized for him. Liuliu, lacking knowledge of Arabic numerals, had no choice but to write tediously: "Two threes are six, three threes are nine, three fours are twelve, three fives are fifteen, three sixes are eighteen," and so on. What a chore it was! How much easier would it be with Arabic numerals? Once Gong Dafu had memorized the multiplication table, she planned to take it a step further and teach him how to write arithmetic equations. Just thinking about teaching that in Chinese characters was daunting enough. Thankfully, the children of the Yang family were smart! But how long would it take Gong Dafu to learn all this?
