บท 25: The Apocalypse is Coming, Spread the Word

Blanche overheard something and looked over curiously, "What did you say? Speak louder."

Atticus immediately kept quiet and casually helped with serving the meal as if nothing happened.

Seeing this heartwarming scene, Alice couldn't help but smile.

Five days later, the temperature had risen to forty-five degrees. People on the internet were complaining about the unbearable weather, constantly tagging experts for explanations. However, all meteorologists seemed to have disappeared, and everyone could only leave messages on the official website, hoping someone would come forward with an explanation.

After numerous calls, an official statement was finally released in the afternoon, stating that the weather was abnormal, the cause was under investigation, and people were advised not to panic. They were also reminded to take precautions against the high daytime temperatures and avoid going out during peak heat.

Netizen A: "Give us a specific timeframe. When will it return to normal, and can you send some rescue supplies first?"

Netizen B: "I now miss the days of going to work. As long as I can go back to those times, I'm willing to be a corporate slave."

Netizen C: "The apocalypse is coming, spread the word!"

There were daily reports online about the temperatures in different regions, with one place even reaching a staggering sixty degrees. Some jokingly posted that standing under the sun for an hour could turn someone into a black coal ball.

In the neighborhood owners' group, there were daily complaints about heatstroke affecting either themselves or their family members.

As the temperature rose, the effectiveness of air conditioning noticeably decreased. Even with the temperature set to the lowest, the indoor environment remained hot and stifling.

Alice took out pre-frozen ice cubes and placed them in buckets, then carried the buckets to various rooms to cool them down.

Blanche hung up sunshade curtains to reduce sunlight exposure.

Arnold brought out chilled watermelon and sour plum juice from the refrigerator. "Don't be in a rush, sit down and take a break."

Alice walked over, picked up a piece of chilled watermelon, and took a refreshing bite. Ah, the relief!

With such a scorching sun, it was time to take out and install the solar panels.

Who knew when the neighborhood's electrical circuit would fail again? It could be a real struggle in the heat.

In the afternoon at 6 o'clock, the temperature had slightly dropped but still maintained around 35 degrees.

Alice, alone, drove out. The solar panels were too large to be taken out and installed without being noticed by others at home, so she needed to find a secluded place.

She arrived at the foot of a nearby hill, looked around, and saw no one—a serene and quiet setting.

Alice then took out the solar panels from her storage space, a total of twenty pieces. Their house happened to be on the top floor, making installation straightforward.

She stuffed the panels into the car, and for the ones that didn't fit, she secured them on the roof. After patting her hands, she was ready to leave.

At that moment, a sweet and delicate female voice came from the nearby woods. "Brother Qin, why did you bring me here?

Hearing this voice, Alice paused. Why did it sound so familiar?

"Beryl, I've given your family so much food. You should give me something sweet in return, right?" An eager male voice followed.

Alice raised an eyebrow, taking light steps to approach.

"By the way, why is Alexander still at your place?" Denim looked displeased as he gazed at the charming woman in front of him.

Beryl's eyes flickered. Why else? Of course, it was to get access to the storage space. Unfortunately, no matter how she pressured him, Alexander remained tight-lipped.

"You know I'm a weak woman. My uncle's family is lazy, and before I met you, I could only use Alexander to find supplies for us. Otherwise, during those days when we were trapped by the flood, I would have starved to death long ago."

Beryl's eyes were slightly red, looking pitiful, "nothing happened between me and Alexander. I don't love him at all. He's the one who has been pestering me. If it weren't for his usefulness, I would have kicked him out long ago."

Denim observed her expression, seeing her righteous indignation, he softened his tone, "From now on, I'll protect your family. Quickly cut ties with Alexander."

"I know." Beryl's voice was tender as she reached out, encircling the man's neck, and planted a kiss on his lips.

In the midst of the apocalypse, survival was paramount. Purity and innocence meant little in the face of life and death. If lying down could lead to a better life, why go through the trouble of suffering?

Not long after, there were murmurs and sounds coming from the woods.

Alice, not having a particular interest in eavesdropping on someone else's affairs, recorded a short video and left.

On her way back, Alice noticed that some shops were unexpectedly open. After hesitating for a few seconds, she decided to stop her car.

The shops were crowded with people. The owner, a burly man, had more than ten bodyguards standing at the entrance. It wasn't surprising that he dared to open a store in these chaotic times.

"We only accept gold, not cash. Gold jewelry and the like are also acceptable. Barter is allowed, and you can exchange goods for goods. Weapons, tools, etc., can be exchanged for food."

Hearing this, Alice was somewhat surprised, but after a moment's thought, she understood. In these troubled times, the only way to protect oneself was through weapons. If you couldn't buy weapons, exchange for them. Everyone had tools at home.

Alice wandered around the store and found that it was quite well-stocked, with a variety of goods, like a small supermarket. She approached the meat stall, where a sign read: "No limit on half a pound of meat. One chicken leg for one gram of gold or an iron shovel. Half a pound of pork for five grams of gold or two kitchen knives..."

Many people were buying meat, crowding around to avoid missing out, and some even got into arguments over it.
