Shinji turned around briefly to make sure that Akiko was busy with the customers and not listening in on them before replying to Midori.

"I know that much," Midori replied. "But why?"

Shinji shrugged.

"They managed to become one of the two strongest family in Tokyo through the hard work of two previous generations. Alas, the Yamagata family is not going to retain their status for much longer unless it can somehow link hands with the Matsumoto family."

Midori scowled at Shinji.

"You have conveniently left this little fact out of your original novel."
