บท 8: Classes
As everyone lines up instructor Karaka on stage looks over us and goes over everything that we need to know now that we are official trainees and ends with "Alright, today's last routine. based on the swordsmanship test you have already seen, the class will be divided and lessons will start tomorrow. Licht Bach, Ilya Lindsay, Brett Lloyd, Judith... you will be the ten people in class A"
"As you are the top of the list, you will have tougher and more difficult training than other classes, so be prepared. Next is Mark, Woodluff, Alfred... Amelia Kickland. Those mentioned will be the 35 people in class B, next are the trainees in class C"
'Can't we just get this over with, I'm gonna die of boredom at this rate' I think
"Those mentioned will be the 54 people in class C" he says
"Huh, your name is not among them" Judith says from behind me
"And the last person Airen Parriera will be in class F" he exclaims
...
"In this class I will be teaching you the basics of the sword for todays class so I can see what level you are all on need what you need to focus on in the future" an instructor says
The class was very basic for the first day with us demonstrating different basic swings before we continued to some basic sparring with everyone else in the group
In the days coming the training didn't get much harder for me, but everyone else seems to be worn out after training
The training did actually help me with some of my experience as I had never really fought many people until now, it was only in my memories and experiences so it barely took any time to get used to it
I was currently in the main training room as our classes had just finished and I didn't really have anywhere to go, I look toward Airen and Judith who seem to start training again
"We're increasing the intensity today" Judith stretches"
"You can take it easy though" he responds to the worn out Judith
Brett walks over to them "Blue hair? Did you come to pick a fight?" Judith asks him who is right in front of them at this point
"I have something to tell you, so please wait"
"Huh!? Why me?"
"I need to tell you something too, Airen Parriera" he says to them both "I want to train regularly from now on"
This stuns everyone before he continues "from what you've shown in the mid-term evaluation and during our last fight, you have this deep concentration that I don't seem to have. I would like you to teach me that. I'll also teach you how to use the sword. I would like for us to make up for each other's shortcoming's and grow together!"
everyone stays quiet for a little bit before Judith decides to speak up " what are you up to? what are you trying to do now after testing Airen during the duel you two had. Aren't you trying to make use of him for your own benefit"
"Use him, sure, you're right" he responds bluntly
"You're pretty shameless then aren't you!" she shouts back at him
"But is that really a bad thing?" he says back to Judith "I can obviously get satisfactory growth on my own. But, that kind of method is inefficient here. Besides I won't just be the ones using you. You guys can also use me to your advantage. You've also been competing with Airen all the time except from formal classes. Judith. I believe I need to gain experience from various people, let's look at the bigger picture. The swordsmanship doesn't end here"
"This is an opportunity! I'm here to learn and compete fiercely with more people. And then gain fruitful experience" determination overflowing from his words
"Wow, a class A saying that to to a class C?" someone says
"Fine. But will it be okay though?" Airen says back to Brett "I'm way too incompetent compared to you. Will you be able to learn anything from me?"
"I told you already that you already have something that I don't. I've been thinking about it since the mid-term evaluation. What exactly is it? I've been trying the same thing. But why am I still so different from him? The time I've spent on training should be about the same as his... something that makes him different from me... something that only Airen Parriera!"
"I kept watching you for a long time and eventually I realized. That's it! everyone has the same limited time. Bu the density of time was different. From the beginning to the end of the training session, Airen Parriers didn't lose focus. Let me know too. How do you manage to stay so focused?"
"I don't really know" he responds
"I expected you to say that since all geniuses usually say similar things" Brett says again
"W-what do you mean? Genius? I'm not" Airen denies his statement as Brett walks away
"I have private training today, so I'll get going. Judith you're gonna be practicing with me tomorrow, right"
"What the hell are you talking about!? I never agreed to anything" she exclaims back
"Oh, and let me give you a piece of advice. Airen Parriera, stop putting yourself down with words like that. You were born into the Parriera family which is of noble blood. I didn't realize it at first but now you've shown enough acts and ability that befits one from a noble family. So be proud of yourself as a noble and show a dignified appearance accordingly" he says with a serious tone towards Airen
Continuing on a little while and I see Brett and Judith in the middle of a spar while Airen was doing his weird sleeping concentration thing, I don't even know what to call it but if it worked then, oh well
Brett also tried to copy him before he fell asleep and was woken up by his friends a bit later, I snicker a bit while watching this before Brett sits in a cross-legged position
"I got it! my pose was the problem. They say it's usually done by sitting cross-legged"
"You dummy! you know that's no use right? Airen is just a special case" Judith leans over Brett
"You won't know it until you try"
"Sure, whatever" she responds and walks off
I look at them form their own little group as it slowly got bigger with people meditating, by this point there was at least 30 people meditating
We were in the middle of class and Brett and Judith were just at the end of their duel, Brett had won and the gap between him and Judith was getting larger, not by a large amount but he is defiantly getting stronger faster than she is
"This bastard! That was foul! one more time!" she shouts angrily at Brett
"Judith!" Ahmed shouts back at Judith
"Let's duel after class" she then says to Brett
...
It had been a long time since I had arrived here and am currently kneeling in a training with Ian in front of everyone
"It's been 9 months since all of you came here. During your training you have endured through several evaluations and rigorous training, and there are many of you who have improved quite a lot. Let me get straight to the point. The 'Final Assessment.' Unlike the midterm assessment, we won't be measuring your skills by giving you a fixed amount of time or rounds to go by. It's a bit abstract, but in the final evaluation we evaluate based on your potential abilities" he says this with a grin while looking over us
"hohoho, don't worry too much. I believe it won't be so difficult. You will need to demonstrate the area you excel the most at in swordsmanship. You could incorporate a fatal strike, or show us a keleidoscopic sword technique that dazzles the viewers, you may use any means possible to show us what you can do. I'm sure everyone here will be able to blossom into their full potential. I hope you do your best during your remaining 90 days. And this may be quite early but, I've prepared a gift for you all" he throws off his overcoat, draws his sword
"It's just and old man's sword dance, but I sincerely hope you can learn from it" he closes his eyes and starts to focus
he starts with a simple horizontal slash before seamlessly connecting it with another and another and another before what seems like a dance, just like what he said
his gaze came to me a few times throughout the performance
His show finally came to an end with a thrust which blew the wind
I take glances at fellow students who seem so be so drawn into his skills
"This is where my sword dance ends. I wish you good luck" he walks between us all and toward the exit
after he leaves most of the students start to talk to each other about what had just occurred
I walk to a corner of the room and sit down to watch over what was going on and what people will do after this
Most of them head straight to training with one outlier
Airen, he went back to his normal meditation sleep thing
It was a surprise, even to me, I thought he would get some inspiration from seeing that, but he did not
It had been a few weeks since that incident and all the hype around it had mostly died down with a few still holding onto that feeling
I see Brett and Judith sitting on a bench and listen into their conversation
They were talking about the test and Judith was worried for Airen because he has been on his weird training thing for all this time while Brett wasn't worried at all saying that it was 'potential' and not current with the fact that he had improved the most since the start of the academy
and the fact that in the final test 'future potential' is more important than 'current potential'
They then brought up who will get first between me and Ilya, Brett thought that Ilya would get first as it was based on future potential and that she has a better potential due to her Lindsay family sword technique so she has more potential
On the other hand hand Judith was determined to win and get first place and insults her brother Carl in the process before she appears and she says that she will win
that reminds me that Carl actually disappeared a while back, around 2 or 3 years back, I don't know exactly when, I just remember overhearing my dad say something about it
Brett challenges her as well saying that she wouldn't be able to win without her sky sword family sword style so she should use before she walks off
I feel like I'm being ignored, but, I've always liked being an observer compared to being involved in every little thing, it just seems like a waste of time to me
