บท 12: What’s Next ?

Nia's POV

As the hospital staff carried Abuela's lifeless body, I stood by in somber silence. Tears flowed freely down Diego's face, and his grief was almost too much to bear. He clung to me, unable to let go, as if afraid that more loss would follow. He revealed something that tugged at my heart even more.

"Last night, she kept calling for Sofia," Diego said through his tears. His voice trembled with the weight of his sorrow.

Isabel held Diego even closer, offering him the warmth of her embrace. "Thank you for taking care of Diego and Abuela," I told her. Her presence had been a pillar of support in this difficult time.

Diego, still grappling with his emotions, expressed his fear. "I miss my sister, Nia."

"We'll bring her back, Diego, I promise," I assured him, my heart heavy with the weight of my own promise.

Omar, who had patiently been watching the scene, stepped forward. "I'll take Diego home," he said, extending a reassuring hand to me.

Diego hesitated, then turned to me. "Can I talk to you for a moment outside, Nia?"

We stepped away from the others, and Diego's eyes held a mix of sadness and concern. "Do you trust him?" he asked, referring to Juan.

I considered his question, aware of the complexities of my relationship with Juan. "Juan? I'm not entirely sure, but he's all we've got in finding Sofia."

Diego's grip tightened as if afraid of losing me. "I'm so scared, Nia. I've lost Sofia, Abuela... I can't bear to lose you too."

I held Diego close, embracing the shared grief that weighed on us. "We're here for each other, Diego. Wherever Abuela is, she's watching over us in a happy place. And I'll find Sofia, I promise you."

"Please go home now, Diego," I pleaded with him. He mustered a faint smile and waved goodbye, as Omar led him away.

As I turned to leave the hospital, I found Isabel smiling at me from behind. "He'll be fine; he's a strong boy," she said, offering comfort.

"Thank you for everything, Isabel," I told her, genuinely grateful for her support.

My trust in Isabel grew, and I felt the need to ask, "Can I trust you, Isabel?"

She met my gaze with unwavering assurance. "You can trust me as much as you trust Juan. Our loyalty is to you."

And so, I ventured to delve into the shadows of Juan's past. "What's the relationship between Juan and Armando?" I asked Isabel, curious and apprehensive.

She offered a knowing smile, though her answer left me with more questions. "I don't know the details, Nia. It's Juan's darkest secret, and no one is ready to reveal it."

Isabel, though, shared an observation that took me by surprise. "One thing I'm sure of, Nia, is the way he looks at you. He's never looked at any lady like that before."

The sincerity in her words struck a chord in my heart, and I couldn't help but wonder how Juan's feelings might truly be deeper than the murky waters of his past.

The atmosphere outside the hospital was tense. I sat in the car, my thoughts heavy with the recent loss of Abuela.

Juan, my anchor in this storm, broke the silence, his voice warm yet burdened. "Let's go home, Nia," he said softly, holding me close as we sat in the car.

I nodded, grateful for his presence. We had been through so much in such a short time, and it felt good to have him by my side.

As Juan started the car, a thought crossed his mind, and he realized he had forgotten his jacket at the hospital. With a brief, "I'll be right back," he exited the car, leaving me with a feeling of unease. The hospital seemed to hold a heavy weight, memories of the night etched in my mind. I watched as he disappeared back into the building, the gravity of recent events hanging over me like a storm cloud.

Juan's POV

As I retrieved my jacket, I ran into Isabel by the quiet corridor.

"Nia," she began, "she's really special, you know?"

I couldn't deny it. Nia was extraordinary in her own right, capable of altering the course of our lives.

"She has the power to change everything, Isabel," I replied, understanding the magnitude of Nia's presence in my life.

Isabel cautioned me, her voice filled with concern. "We must tread carefully, Juan, for her sake and ours."

Her words hung in the air, a reminder of the risks involved. I had always known the danger of my world, but with Nia, the stakes were higher than ever.

"You're playing with fire, Juan," she warned, her gaze unwavering, "and I wouldn't want you to get burnt."

With a nod, Isabel left, leaving me to contemplate the intricate web of decisions that had brought me to this point. Nia was the light in my life, but it was a fragile brilliance, easily extinguished if we weren't careful.

With the weight of Isabel's words echoing in my mind, I hurried back to the car. Nia sat quietly, lost in thought, her face a mix of grief and confusion. She looked up as I got in.

"Everything okay?" she asked, her eyes searching for answers in my expression.

I sighed, wanting to share Isabel's cryptic warnings but also to shield Nia from further worries. "Everything's fine, Nia. We're heading home."

Nia nodded, but her eyes still held the sadness that had been haunting her. I took her hand, gently intertwining my fingers with hers. The drive back home was mostly silent, both of us absorbed in our thoughts and the weight of the day's events.

When we arrived at our apartment, Nia made her way to her bedroom, her need for solitude evident. I understood the heaviness she carried, knowing that our shared pain had deepened our connection.

But as I sat alone in my room, I couldn't help but feel that the ghosts of our past were closing in.However, I couldn't ignore Isabel's cryptic warning, reminding me that we were treading dangerous waters.

As time passed, Nia came into my bedroom. Her eyes, though still filled with grief, seemed to have a touch of curiosity, as if she was ready to confront whatever lay ahead.

"What do we do now?" she asked, her voice wavering.

I stood up and took her in my arms, feeling the warmth of her embrace, the love that had grown between us in the most unlikely of circumstances. "We move forward, Nia. We find Sofia and uncover the truth."

She leaned into me, her head resting on my chest. "Juan, you're my anchor in this storm. I don't know where we're going, but I'm not alone. Thank you."

"We're in this together," I assured her. "For Sofia, for Abuela, and for our future."

We were two souls tethered by fate, facing the unknown with love and determination.

And, little did we know, that our journey had only just begun.
