บท 8: Chapter 8

Tinnitus rings in my ears as I lay on my back, the hard scales of the fire dragon, its hard spiky scales not as comfortable as I would have liked.

It had been a long drawn out battle, but I had finally beaten this goddamn bastard, it only took me so many tries it reminded me of when a friend of mine put me up against the hardest boss in elden ring with no equipment despite me having never played the game before, it took so many tries to beat, but his face after I beat it before even he had was well worth the grind.

My body has already stitched itself back together, while levels may not grant straight up strength buffs, frankly the level of regeneration I have as a level 500 is fucking absurd, I can even recreate that one scene from tokyo ghoul, the one where Kaneki gets his leg grabbed but spins himself around to kick the guy in the throat, breaking his leg in the process, before having it completely heal before he even hit the ground. Although things like lost limbs would require a few hours at minimum to heal, bones and cuts could heal in moments.

This comes at the cost of energy, so unfortunately no infinite regeneration for me, but considering that being level 500 gives me frankly absurd stamina reserves its a non issue, meaning I can basically survive anything less than my entire brain being destroyed, so long as I escape the battlefield or kill my enemy of course.

I finally raise myself from my not so comfortable mattress and look around, the cracked black fields of volcanic rock spreading out in every direction, as I stare proudly at the scene of two dead drakes, and hundreds of kobolds, wyverns, wrms, and more. the minions I had had to kill to get this dragon to appear littering the ashen landscape, surrounded by broken weapons and armor. After all, even making all my own weapons to prioritize durability above all mortal metals can only do so much and the tutorial was too stingy to give me anything like mythril or orichalchum despite being obviously fantasy inspired.

This was the final hidden quest of the trial, and as such, I was finally fucking done, done with this godforsaken place, it only took more deaths than I can possibly count, and likely a few millions of years, this one run had lasted a full 2734 years after all, and I had died what? A few tens of thousands of times? I stopped counting after 2 thousand.

By now the buildup of scars from deaths had gotten to the point where I was more scar than skin, and I swear if I can't fix this before leaving the trial I'll be livid, I may like scars, but there is a limit, and I would say being 93% scar tissue is well beyond that line.

But that's hardly what's important right now. What is important, is the announcement that I had been eagerly awaiting for millenia now, as the timer finally expires, and I appear in my safehouse, the corpses neatly piled behind me as automated systems begin to sort and butcher the bodies.

What had once been an old dilapidated warehouse had blossomed into a vast facility, complete with automated mines, farms, forges, butchering facilities, storage, etc, the various buildings spreading off for kilometers in every direction, as I walk to the very center of the facility, in which the final construct will be built.

Every single quest item in the game is required to build this structure, and it represents the end of the trial, I walk up to its spot, the center of my safehouse, a large grandiose park, and I walk along the path, the edges dotted with statues, each representing a boss I had felled along my path, starting with the weakest, and working in, starting with a simple queen slime, to a zombie leader, continuing on, I make sure not to forget to spit on the statue of the divine elk along my path, as I enter the central courtyard, in which I find the giant statues of 4 dragons surrounded by their kin, each representing one of the 4 stereotype elements, wind, earth, fire, water. Standing on either side of them are two large drakes.

See the dragons themselves were actually secret quests like the elk queen, not intended or required to be killed. The normal quest, "Draconic hunting." ending once you killed any two drakes, it wasn't even required to kill one of every element, but I wanted to complete all the hidden quests, unwilling to let any potential rewards slip through my fingers.

Finally, I look at the large pond, filled with beautiful crystalline water, and rare valuable herbs, one of which being the "Panacea." a cure all I got as a reward for a hidden quest, its utility is unfortunately quite low considering its effects would only activate if you ate it within minutes of harvesting the plant, and there was no way of preserving it after harvesting it, nor could you take it with you in a portable planter.

And considering if I had any major injuries, by the time I would be able to return to the safehouse I would likely be completely healed or stable anyway, it was essentially worthless, although it produced a nectar that both would satiate and refresh the consumer for a full day and taste exactly like whatever it is they wanted most at the moment, truly the omni spice, put it in tea and you get the perfect tea imaginable, or on steak and it will taste exactly like you want it to, truly quite amazing.

Oh I'm going off on a tangent again, well anyway, I now stand on an empty horizontal platform, sitting atop a large pyramid overlooking the entire facility, a menu popping up before me, with the simple message. [Complete the monument?]

I tap yes, and the system begins its magic, materials from across the entire facility brought forth by incredibly efficient logistics systems that would make Jeff Bezos turn green with envy, before being lifted by strands of invisible energy, the materials, every quest Item I had every collected, seemings to melt into an ephemeral metal inspiring feelings of divinity, as it forms a complex but beautiful structure, the once bald pyramid now topped by a grand machine, flaps of glowing metal flowing down the sides, like a flower, as in the center is suspended a glowing ball of energy, surrounded by two rings that seem to phase through one another as they circle the wispy ball of energy within.

(an, next chapter he will be reincarnated in Danmachi, hope you enjoyed this chapter, I know some of you probably don't like how little time I put into the trial, but I wanted to get to Danmachi already, and I could honestly write an entire novel centered entirely around the trial alone.)
