Snape suppressed his inner excitement and began to tally up the magical ingredients he had lost.
"African tree snake skin, two pieces, unicorn horn pair, mandrake root three portions, boneless eel meat five bundles..." Snape gritted his teeth as he calculated his losses, realizing that the intruder had treated his storeroom as a potion shop and even left him a three-fold discount coupon!
Moreover, looking at the stolen magical ingredients, Snape thoughtfully noted that unicorn horn and African tree snake skin, despite being mixed with some other things, were like fireworks in his eyes, especially as a master of potion-making.
Someone was secretly brewing complex potions! That was Snape's initial reaction. It piqued his interest, and he promptly woke up Professor Flitwick of Ravenclaw in the middle of the night.
"Severus, do you know what time it is?" Professor Flitwick emerged from his bedroom, wearing a blue nightgown and a sleep cap, with sleepy eyes.
"Someone broke into my potion storeroom and stole a batch of potion ingredients."
"Didn't you set up any protective enchantments?" Professor Flitwick asked, eyes wide with surprise. "I remember your raw materials are quite expensive, aren't they?"
Snape clenched his jaw and didn't engage in that topic. "Among the stolen ingredients are those used in brewing complex potions, so I hope you can help me investigate and find the thief."
When Professor Flitwick heard the term "complex potions," he also became serious. Both of them quickly made their way to Snape's office.
Looking at the damaged door lock, Professor Flitwick raised his wand, casting a spell that revealed Snape's afternoon apparition in the office.
"Move the time back a bit, roughly half an hour ago," Snape said, watching his own image reading a book without expression.
Professor Flitwick adjusted the time the spell revealed, and they witnessed a phoenix apparition in the room.
Professor Flitwick and Snape: ...
They watched as a phoenix flew into the office, purposefully opened and ransacked Snape's potion stash, and even left a bag of coins on the desk.
In the wizarding world, phoenixes, also known as Fawkes, were sacred, loyal creatures, and very few witches and wizards earned their recognition. Currently, there was only one known wizard in the magical world bonded with a phoenix – the great Albus Dumbledore. When people thought of phoenixes, they immediately associated them with Dumbledore.
Snape and Professor Flitwick held the same belief. In their minds, phoenixes were beyond imitation, and this kind of being couldn't be conjured by Transfiguration or Animagus transformations.
"Dumbledore Professor must have a reason for this..." Professor Flitwick thought for a moment, but he couldn't figure out the motive. All he could dryly say was, "It's possible that he has some serious illness..."
So, without saying anything, Snape pulled Professor Flitwick aside and compensated him for his losses. Of course, Dumbledore himself didn't believe that Fawkes could do such a thing. Everything about this incident was suspicious. Snape would have to consult Dumbledore.
However, the true mastermind behind this incident was currently brewing potions in the Room of Requirement. He had avoided using his office, fearing that Snape would come knocking.
Tom added the crushed African mistletoe berries to the cauldron and then the ground unicorn horn. The next steps involved high-temperature heating and a long simmering process.
With these steps, the complex potion was almost complete. Once the potion finished brewing, all Tom needed to do was add a spoonful of powdered fairy wings and stir counterclockwise three times to obtain the finished complex potion.
Tom smiled with satisfaction. This semester would indeed be filled with freedom and fulfillment!
However, when he returned to his office, Tom realized that Professor Lohart had already sent him the class schedule for the semester. Looking at the schedule, Tom found that it was packed, with nearly four classes per day on average!
If he followed this schedule, Tom wouldn't have to worry about freedom or lack thereof. He'd be lucky not to drop dead from exhaustion. It wasn't a 40-minute class; it was a full-hour lecture, and he had to deliver them himself! Listening to an hour-long lecture and giving one were entirely different concepts.
