Late at night, Tom was still burning the midnight oil. The illustrated guide provided detailed descriptions of various wand cores and woods, accompanied by corresponding pictures. Coupled with the samples provided by Mr. Ollivander, Tom gradually gained a better understanding of the materials required for wandcraft.

Tom: Yeah (^-^)V

Although he didn't know the practical use of wandcraft, the satisfaction of acquiring a skill for free was quite fulfilling.

The next day, when Mr. Ollivander checked Tom's progress, he was taken aback. He had originally given Tom three days to finish the book, but Tom had memorized it all in one night.

Excitedly, he started the next phase of teaching.

Speaking of which, Mr. Ollivander's work was much more relaxed. His shop already stored thousands of wands, enough to sustain him for several years. Moreover, with few customers coming in before the start of the school season, he led a leisurely life.

Idle hands are the devil's workshop, so why not teach students?

"Tom, do you know what a wand really is?"

Tom recalled the process of casting spells with a wand, "An amplifier for magic?"

Mr. Ollivander shook his head, "A wand is not an amplifier of magic; in fact, it's more like an auxiliary tool..." Mr. Ollivander took out a large parchment paper with a drawing of a person and their internal structure.

"Beginners often have this misunderstanding, thinking that the magic within a wizard is weak and needs amplification from a wand. This idea is fundamentally wrong. If a wand were an amplifier of magic, why would great wizards like Dumbledore practice wandless magic?"

This statement left Tom puzzled: indeed, if a wand were an amplifier, why would powerful wizards like Dumbledore bother with wandless magic? Wouldn't it be a self-imposed weakening of their abilities? If a wizard's attack power was 100 with a wand and 10 without, why would Dumbledore, well-fed and clothed, bother with wandless magic?

Afraid of being disarmed in battle? Well, you could prepare a spare wand or figure out a way to fix the wand to your hand. Wasn't that simpler than wandless magic?

"A wand merely assists wizards in channeling their magical power, enabling them to concentrate and cast more complex spells. Most spells require the use of a wand, but spells can also be cast without one. Wandless magic requires remarkable focus and skill, and powerful wizards use it to hone their abilities."

Tom understood the gist; wizards themselves possessed tremendous magical power. The unleashed magic of a transformed wizard, like the silent Riddle, attested to this fact. A wand was more like the fancy accessories on a modern bow, aiding in more precise casting. However, it didn't prevent experts from hitting the bullseye with a simple horn bow from a hundred paces.

After explaining the principles of wands, Mr. Ollivander proceeded to teach Tom how to craft a wand.

"Different magical materials combined together yield different effects. Of course, the length of the wand also has an impact."

Saying this, Mr. Ollivander invited Tom to sit at the workbench. He took a piece of pine wood and an old unicorn tail hair. While explaining, he polished the pine wood, split it open, and embedded the unicorn tail hair.

After embedding the wand core, Mr. Ollivander took out a small carving knife with a tip as fine as a strand of hair. Without explaining further, he focused on carving.

After about a quarter of an hour, Mr. Ollivander finished the internal crafting of the wand. He casually took out a small note but realized something, and put the note back.

"Carving runes inside the wand can achieve various effects. Just having a wand body and a core is not enough; different wandmakers use different runes. If possible, get your hands on a wand and study it..."

Mr. Ollivander spoke halfway and thought of something, his eyes lit up with longing.

He reassembled the two pieces of pine wood, then effortlessly broke the wand core. He took out a roll of parchment with various strange symbols.

"These are some basic runes in wandcraft, along with some arrangement methods. Carve them on a piece of wood yourself, start with larger sizes, and gradually shrink them. Eventually, make a rune no larger than a grain of rice."

After assigning the task, Mr. Ollivander left Tom to it. He left a message that once Tom finished, he should show it to him.

Tom found a workbench and sat down. He turned on the magical lamp on the workbench—it was an alchemical device somewhat similar to the Muggle shadowless lamp in an operating room. Then, he fixed the parchment and the carved wooden board on the table.

Carefully studying the arrangement of runes on the parchment, Tom noticed that most arrangements consisted of seven runes. The beginning and the end were fixed, while the middle varied greatly. The arrangements also had annotations explaining the effects they could achieve. These arrangements mostly pursued "stability," allowing the magical power passing through them to run smoothly.

Tom chose a starting rune and began to carve.

It was much more difficult than he had imagined. A slight tremor, and the entire rune would be ruined—runes were extremely delicate, and even a slight deviation could lead to drastic changes in properties.

Tom spent nearly an hour carving the first rune. While he managed to make it look exactly like the one on the parchment, the strokes of the entire rune were uneven, making it an unsatisfactory product.

However, when Mr. Ollivander came over, he was very pleased and praised Tom: in his eyes, to carve something like this on the first try showed talent.

For the rest of the day, Tom continued to carve runes. By the time he returned to the dormitory at night, he had mastered the carving methods of six runes. What surprised him was that not only had his wandcraft knowledge bar turned into a question mark, but he had also gained a few points in alchemy.

It seemed that there were commonalities between wandcraft and alchemy.
