บท 84: Dumont Dukedom’s Army Arrives
A month and a half passed since Blanc started preparing for the Dumont Dukedom army's arrival.
They've prepared various things such as new infantry formations, fortifications, and traps.
In addition to this, their scouts were finally able to confirm the exact number of soldiers sent by the Dumont Dukedom to destroy their city.
According to the scouts, the Dumont Dukedom sent 10,000 men of which only 2,000 can be considered elites.
As for the commanders, the Dumont Dukedom didn't hold back at all. It seems that they were furious because Blanc dared to beat up their envoy.
As per the reports, they sent all six of their top-tier combatants including their ace warrior, Gar Grayleaf.
Fortunately for Resonance City, the Dumont Dukedom seemed to have underestimated them by sending only half of their total army of 20,000 men.
It was understandable though because they only saw the 1,500 trainees when the envoy visited their city.
Logically, 10,000 men along with all of the top-tier combatants should be more than enough to destroy a lone city in the wilderness.
Unfortunately for the Dumont Dukedom army, they fell right into Blanc's trap because currently, Resonance City's army has a total of 5,500 high-quality soldiers including the recently graduated trainees.
Out of the 5,500 men, 1,500 were elites of various classes such as heavy infantry, cavalry, and archers.
In addition to this, the remaining 4000 ordinary soldiers were of high quality and could be considered elites when compared to other kingdom's soldiers.
Lastly, there were nine mighty battalion commanders who were ready for combat and an undefeated and charismatic general leading the entire army.
Outside the city walls, the five hundred elite heavy infantry together with five hundred veteran infantry soldiers were assembled in defensive formations.
In addition to this, six Resonance Ballistas were set up on top of the city walls along with Eden and a thousand archers.
Blanc only revealed 2000 men on the surface because he wanted to corner and wipe out the entire Dumont Dukedom army if possible.
He believes that the one thousand elite and veteran infantry stationed in front of the city walls will be able to stall the Dumont Dukedom army long enough until they successfully execute their plan.
A few hours later, a large army carrying huge flags of the Dumont Dukedom can be seen marching on the horizon.
The soldiers prepared their hearts for the upcoming battle by repeatedly reminding themselves of their families and the good lives that they are living in the city.
They cannot falter and they will not allow themselves to falter here.
Blanc himself was standing on top of the city walls. His eyes narrowed into slits upon seeing the arriving army of the Dumont Dukedom
"You dare march into my territory? If you guys like my territory this much then you shall remain here for eternity!"
Another hour passed and the Dumont Dukedom army finally arrived in front of their city.
A tense atmosphere can be felt throughout the entire city as the two armies face off against each other.
A little while later, a messenger was sent by the Dumont Dukedom army.
In response, a representative was chosen from Blanc's army as well to try and "negotiate" with the enemy's messenger.
"Your brutish ways of beating up our envoy made our Duke furious. However, the Duke is a benevolent man and he has chosen to give your backwater territory a chance."
"Surrender now and we shall onl-!"
*PAH*
"Shut the fuck up, after marching here for months with a large army like that, you're going to talk peace? Do you think the people here are idiots? Go back to your commander and tell them that Resonance City will never surrender to the likes of you!"
The "messenger" sent by Blanc directly slapped the enemy's messenger after hearing such pretentious speech.
The guy knows that it's impossible to talk about peace at this stage so he might as well slap him with everything that he got.
The enemy messenger fell from his horse due to the impact of the slap while Blanc's messenger immediately rode back to the direction of their army.
"Pffft! Hahahahaha!"
Helena and the battalion commanders couldn't help but laugh while veins popped on the Dumont Dukedom general's head after witnessing the humiliation suffered by their messenger.
"These mannerless barbarians dare to humiliate us! Destroy their entire city! Kill everyone down to the last dog or chicken! Leave none alive! Chaaaaargeee!"
The enemy general immediately ordered his men to attack after being angered by Blanc's messenger.
Blanc smiled after seeing that his plan had worked.
One catalyst of failure is letting your decisions be clouded by rage. As a general, you should be in control of your emotions and think of proper ways to reduce casualty.
It seems that Blanc is right, this enemy general is indeed stupid. He's already a failure as a general if he lets his men charge without a plan simply because he is angered by the enemy.
Because of this, the Dumont Dukedom army's soldiers didn't even notice the pitfall traps scattered near the Resonance City army's defensive lines.
Many enemy soldiers fell for the trap and were stabbed to death by the wooden spikes inside the trap.
Around five hundred enemy soldiers fell victim and died.
"These cowards!"
The enemy general stomped his feet in rage after seeing his men fall victim to the traps.
"Hmmph! Celebrate now, once our army reaches your defensive lines, let's see if you can still be happy."
Unfortunately for him, the sight of his army colliding with Blanc's army didn't happen as soon as he thought because the Ballistas started firing and decimated around one thousand infantry.
Due to this, some of the enemy army's soldiers further back in the formation hesitated to continue charging.
The Dumont Dukedom general was furious after seeing that some of his soldiers were hesitating.
"WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GUYS DOING?! I SAID CHARGE! THOSE WHO REFUSE TO CHARGE WILL BE TREATED AS DESERTERS!"
The hesitating soldiers' faces paled after hearing that they would be treated as deserters if they didn't charge.
In the Dumont Dukedom, deserters were killed so if they're going to die either way, then it's better to die with honor.
The enemy general's countermeasure proved to be effective because it was able to force the enemy soldiers to break through forcefully from the bombardment of the ballistas.
After a few more minutes, the enemy soldiers finally reached the Resonance City army's defensive lines and the real battle had finally begun.
