As Caleb sinks deep in thought he remembers something and immediately calls his assistant David "David the meeting between Miss Lilian and I want you to keep it a secret from my grandmother" he orders
" Yes of course sir I will keep that in mind"
" Thank you," he says before hanging up the phone.
Caleb had been raised by his grandmother since age six, he had known that she hated his fiance's mother even before he knew about her his grandmother had always held the Evans family in disdain calling them names but while his grandmother would do this his father would pull him away and tell him how good the family his fiance came from was, how biased his grandmother was being because he had always seen them as below her. His father had always told him that he could do anything he wanted and that meant the way he reacted to his fiance and her family was in his hands so he had decided not to be biased or a bigot it did not matter what anyone said he would make his judgment about the person he was to marry.
Lillian had just returned from her night shift at her part-time job this morning she got home she was tired, sweaty, and sore but she trudged the last steps home and retrieved the mail, unlocked the door with the key in her hands threw the pile of mail on the table before falling on the couch and going to sleep. She is woken by a shrill scream she rolls down the couch landing on the floor with a muffled thump as she cracks open one eye seeing her sister holding a letter and hopping around.
" What has gotten into you this morning" she says drowsily not moving from her place on the floor too tired to move she hears her sister reply but her drowsiness makes her unable to make out the words Amber said.
" What" she grumbles.
"I said my acceptance letter came from Harvard University in London"
She doesn't process what her sister says at first as she is still drowsy " What?" she asks confused
"I said my acceptance letter came from Harvard"
The drowsiness in Lilian's eyes vanishes as she processes Ambers's words and in the next moment, she is taking the letter from her sister to read it while jumping around too. When she reads it she can't help but give her scream hurriedly hugging her sister.
" Am so proud of you, I knew you would make me proud this calls for a celebration just tell me what you want and I will get it for you, am so proud of you" she repeats reading the letter again and hugging her sister.
" Well how about we eat out today, hmm please"
" Okay sure, sure whatever you say today is your day just go and get dressed,"
Lilian says smiling as she watches her sister go into the bathroom. She can't go to sleep anymore so she makes herself a cup of coffee, sitting on the chair before reading the rest of the mail most of them are about utility bills but the last one is addressed to her curious she rips it open no one has written to her since these few years to her surprise it is from Caleb Lane asking to take her out this afternoon and writing down his number he apologies for not getting her permission before knowing her address and promises that he had not invaded her privacy.
Lillian for a moment is stunned she never knew her fiancee was that polite but she can't say since she had never met him and rumors are not to be believed she sighs as she text him agreeing to meet him by 2 pm at a restaurant near her home. The sound of the door opens and her sister emerges from the bathroom she must have seen something in her face because she stops drying her hair and frowns.
" Are you okay what is wrong?" Amber asks.
"I am fine it's just my boss wants me at the restaurant by 2 instead of 3 pm anyway don't worry about that, you should get ready I will take a shower " Lilian lies
" Ok then, don't be too long," Amber says with a smile.
Watching Amber go Lilian knew she had to lie to Amber not wanting to worry her, this was not her battle but Lilian's and only Lillian she was the elder sister so she could handle anything the world threw at her. Lilian thinks as she enters the bathroom.
Lilian and Amber have their breakfast at a middle-class restaurant that wasn't too expensive for them to celebrate Ambers's admission. They go home and rest a little before Lillian goes to meet Caleb, the restaurant that Lilian had suggested was a good one but people like Caleb would have been uncomfortable so she arranged a private room. Lilian get there earlier surprisingly Caleb appears at two on the dot, she conceals her surprise as she ushers him to sit down the atmosphere is awkward as it appears they both don't know what to say to each other gathering her courage she begins to speak.
" Hi"
" Hello," he replies okay this is awkward she says to herself.
" Umm would you like to order"
" Sure " he replies she nods and calls the waiter to take their order, as they wait for their food the room descends into silence again but this time he breaks it.
" I heard from my assistant that my grandmother visited your place yesterday am sorry for any inconveniences she might have caused," Caleb says apologizing bowing his head a little as a sign of respect.
" No it's ok don't bow, she didn't do anything," Lilian said nervously waving her hands at him.
" You don't have to be polite, I know how she can be " he insists
" I understand," she says softly "So why did you call me here today "
" I know it is an arranged marriage but I want to get to know you before we get married, even if we can't love each other I want us to be able to accompany one another," Caleb says earnestly.
" You are right and I would like to know you too, my life hasn't been stable for a while, and am still handling some things but I would like to get to know you too," she says after thinking about his words.
" To me, my family is most important and I would do anything for them so I won't lie to you neither would I want you to lie to me "... He continues after taking a breath
" It is about my son would you be comfortable with him am going to be honest with you I won't send him away but I would like him to get to know you as a friend and family"
" I don't mind him and I would like to get to know him too, I also have a little sister and I can't leave her for the world " She doesn't get the chance to continue as the waiter interrupts them by bringing their food.
" I think we should all meet am free on Saturday afternoon, what about you"
"Sure I would like that too just text me the place.
" No problem," she replies happily.
They make idle talk before excusing themselves as they had work to do promising to meet on Saturday.
