He did not dare take the risk. Vero's cheerful and generous nature made it difficult to conceal the excitement of being with him, and it seemed somewhat unrealistic to take her with him to the Java Swamp.

Komer was more worried that Vero, knowing his destination, would insist on going. Therefore, he chose to avoid the issue, deciding to wait until after his trip to the Java Swamp was over.
