Ava was visibly startled by Stare's actions, and her amber eyes seemed to intensify.
"Paraclete," she ordered, "Activate the offensive function."
Instantly, her black wristwatch began to emit a crimson glow, and tiny black spheres detached from it, forming a protective halo around Stare. Each of these spheres projected a menacing red laser light directly onto him.
The tension in the room, which had previously dissipated, became palpable once more as everyone in the class turned into silent observers, including those who had considered intervening. No one dared to confront Ava Osiris Dovian in the state she was in currently, especially for a stranger like Stare. Even Bobby and Joel hesitated to move.
Surprisingly, the only person around who didn't seem pressured by all of this was the target himself, Stare.
His focus had been on the handsome white-haired boy who had just stepped and wasn't even aware of how close he was currently standing to death.
Everyone could tell the only thing keeping Ava's target alive was the fact that she hadn't given the order for her bots to fire, but that didn't seem to be the case for long as the red lights pointed at Stare's body began darkening.
Although some students wanted to call Stare's attention to the impending threat, no one dared to antagonize Ava. They were frozen in place.
Ava opened her mouth to speak again, intensifying the room's tension. However, before she could utter a word, a frail voice from the classroom door interrupted her.
"Alright that's enough."
All eyes turned toward the source of the voice and found a middle-aged man with surprisingly long black hair, dull blue eyes, and a white lab coat standing behind the white-haired boy.
"No killing in my class. The paperwork that follows is always too stressful to fill out. Besides, it's the first day in the academy, and I would like everyone to at least enjoy a class before they accidentally get killed off," the man said in a dull, monotone voice.
Only at this moment did Stare seem to realize the danger he had been in. He glanced up and saw numerous small black sphere objects hovering above him, each pointing a red laser light at him.
A bead of sweat trickled down his face as he looked toward Ava, whose expression remained hostile.
Gulp!
"When did she attack? Was I too distracted, or was her attack just too quick and concealed?" Stare wondered, deeply concerned, as he kept his gaze fixed on Ava.
He wasn't the only one who had their gaze locked on Ava as everyone was also curious as to what her reaction would be.
After a tense pause, Ava's amber eyes seemed to lose some of their intensity. She let out a reluctant sigh.
"Paraclete, deactivate offensive function," she finally said in a low and displeased tone.
Immediately, the red laser lights on Stare's body retracted, and the tiny floating black spheres returned to Ava's watch allowing Stare to breathe out a sigh of relief.
'Were all the Paraclete programs imbued with such a high level of offensive function?' Stare wondered but Paraclete as though reading its custodian's thoughts instantly gave a reply.
[The untempered Paraclete program doesn't posses any form of offensive capability]
"Alright that's enough, you can now have your seats. Nobody is dying today…at least not at the moment." The middle-aged man added in a dull tone, shattering the prevailing classroom silence.
The students promptly reorganized themselves and returned to their seats in an orderly fashion.
The middle-aged man then stepped forward but abruptly stopped in front of Stare's desk, locking eyes with him.
"You must be the student that guy keeps talking about?" the man asked after a moment.
Stare had a pretty good idea of who "that guy" was, and by the tone of the man's statement, it was clear that they didn't really have a good relationship.
Uncertain on how to respond, Stare simply nodded.
After receiving a nod, the middle-aged man continued to the front of the class. He tapped his wristwatch, and a hologram appeared in front of everyone, titled 'Introduction To The Boring Hero Theoretical Knowledge.'
"You can call me Professor Kali Linux, although I'd prefer you didn't," the middle-aged man began.
"...First off, I'm not a Prime, Hero or some amazing role model character, I'm just an extremely bored and smart scientist who decided it might be interesting to teach a bunch of dumb aspiring heroes."
"And as for this 'Boring Hero Theoretical Knowledge' that some of you might be wondering about... well, apparently, some supposedly wise person thought it wouldn't be smart to have heroes as dumb as they were strong, so they decided to include the course as a compulsory major theoretical course in the various Hero Academies…"
"So you can say for the next six months and every weekday in those months, if you're still alive till then, you'll be seeing a very smart bored man come into this class to teach an extremely boring subject..."
As Professor Kali continued with his peculiar introduction and lecture, Stare's thoughts wandered as his gaze drifted toward the seat where Y-204 was seated.
As expected, he had chosen a seat at the very end of the class, in line with his character of always preferring to remain hidden from the public while carrying out his plans and observations.
Staring into Y-204's dull green eyes, no matter how much he tried, he couldn't always seem to decipher what went through his mind.
He couldn't tell if he had unsealed his memories as well, it seemed like he would need more than just seeing him to confirm if he had his memories.
Stare couldn't help but feel conflicted staring into those eyes.
On one end he wasn't comfortable with Y-204 and in fact felt like instantly punching and incapacitating him, after all this was the guy responsible for the pain and deaths of most of his friends and family in his past lives and many other painful predicaments he went through as well, and although all of this happened in his past lives and were mostly organized by the Oracle, he still had to go through the pain of those actions.
And then on the other end, he felt happy seeing him, it was like a longing for a lost comrade. This was also understandable, after all, in all the people he had met in all his numerous Cycles, this guy might be the only person who ironically understood him the most, they were after all bounded by same path and same curse and although their destiny were of an opposing nature, it was still similar at the end.
'who would believe that this emo-looking gloomy kid was the person responsible for almost destroying the world. Well He doesn't look as bad as the previous Cycles. I wonder what identity he got in this cycle.' Stare pondered.
While Stare was lost in his thoughts, he didn't notice that Kali had stopped speaking and walked in front of him. Suddenly, he felt a hand on his shoulder and turned to see Kali's dull blue eyes looking at him.
"What's your name, boy?" Kali asked, his smile small.
"Stare," he replied in a low tone, feeling agitated about what Kali's objective was.
"Well it seems, student Stare here is already very knowledgeable on the topic of our discussion 'The shoddy nature of Energy Condition in Previous Era', hence he prefers using his time to stare at his crush..."
Most of the class immediately burst into mocking laughter at Kali's words.
"Why don't he continue the lesson for us, I believe he might make one or two new contributions to our discussion." Kali said politely whilst still smiling.
Stare's facial expression briefly contorted.
He could understand what Kali's intention was for calling him out.
After all, from a normal perspective, Stare hasn't really left a good impression on the professor.
First was his case with an Elite amongst Elites, Ava Osiris Dovian who would probably end up being the best student in his class due to her intellect. And then there was also his suspected relationship with the vice rector, Just A Guy.
So far it was plausible that the professor would have eyes on him the most and frequently throw tantrums like this.
Slowly standing to his feet, Stare could already see Ava smiling in a sardonic manner at the side while muttering the word "idiot" repeatedly.
I'll be honest.
for some reason this chapter felt odd, couldn't just pinpoint the problem.
I Know I promised to post yesterday but the schedule turned out overwhelming
