Chapter Fifteen: Seeds of Warning

I went to Mentha’s room on the estate. I needed to confirm where Lavender had gone before I could thoroughly ensure she was not near the threat. Cerberus wouldn’t have mentioned he thought he smelled the wolfsbane if he wasn’t sure that was what he was smelling, and I needed to make sure Lavender was safe.

I knocked on Mentha’s door, and it opened to a dark room. She wasn’t there. Even though I was trying to convince myself Lavender was fine, my steps sped up automatically. Something felt off.

I opened my phone and sent Lavender a text.

‘Are you safe?’

I knew as I sent it that the message itself was pointless. I knew if she answered, she could have been lying no matter what she replied. I wasn’t looking for anything specific. Just a reply in general. Some signs she might have had access to call me for help if she needed it. It felt like she would need it.
