"Harland," Vol said. "You take a hundred under your command. Northy, you do the same. We will be lucky to keep even a hundred men together. Keeping three hundred tight through that sea of men will be impossible."

"What signals will we use to regroup should we begin to drift apart?" Harland asked. "Surely our strength will be in our mass, as we make our way forward."

"None," Vol said. "Just aim for the other side. Our strength isn't going to be in our mass, it'll be in the chaos." He turned his eyes to villagers as they stood amongst their prepared wagons, and with their family members, with their poor collection of weapons in hand. He'd dropped his voice as he said it, so only Harland and Northy could hear, and Harland seemed to take his point.

"…So that is why you've brought them," Harland said. He didn't sound particularly surprised. "You mean to have them serve as distractions."
