บท 5: In The Hospital

Many hours had passed and Caitlin's eyes fluttered open. The room was dimly lit and that helped her eyes to adjust to her surroundings easily and quite quickly. When her gaze focused on the ceiling above her and she noticed that she was in a hospital. Caitlin took a breath in and closed her eyes again as her brain couldn't process where and why she was there in the first place.

Caitlin groaned after some seconds when she had tried to move and all her effort had proved futile. She noticed that her throat was patched and there was a bitter taste in her mouth that almost tasted metallic. The effect of whatever drug they had given her made her head feel like she was carrying some dried cement as hair as her head felt heavy.

Caitlin was confused but didn't dwell on it for that moment. Her mind was blank and she just wanted to get some, moisture down her throat. She squeezed her eyes shut again after they had been opened for some seconds and now, her mind was fully aware that she had been restrained. Caitlin frowned upon looking down at her wrists and seeing what they had used – some brown leather cuff-like-looking things.

'At least, she had not been arrested,' Caitlin thought. If she'd seen the usual metal cuffs, it would have been a different situation.

She tried to think about what had happened for her to be here but was visited by a splitting pain that traveled from the middle of her forehead to the beginning of her neck at the back. She shrieked. It was painful and quickly brought tears to Caitlin's eyes. She closed her blue eyes and remained like that for a while as she waited for the pain to subside.

The door to the hospital room that Caitlin occupied flew open and a nurse came running into the place. She had heard the scream as she was walking down the hallway and had entered to check on the patient.

"Miss Caitlin? Miss Caitlin," The nurse called as she ran over to where Caitlin was. Immediately the nurse saw that she'd woken up but her eyes were squeezed shut, she knew that something was quite wrong. She rushed out of the room again to call a doctor that was on duty.

It was not long after that the nurse returned with a tall and dark man. The man had a white beard but was only in his mid-thirties. He was one of the best doctors that the hospital had and he specialized in physical therapy.

Doctor Mark walked closer to the patient, holding her chart in his hand.

"Miss Caitlin?" the doctor asked as he placed his free hand on Caitlin's forearm and squeezed a little. He wanted to get her attention and to know the reason why she'd screamed – as he'd learned from the nurse.

There was a small smile on his warm face and Mark was genuinely concerned about this particular patient.

However, Caitlin did not reply to her name being called but she had heard. The pain that was behind her eyes and in her head didn't allow her to talk yet. But it subsided little by little and the welcoming voice that she'd heard also made her want to open her eyes.

She struggled a little with her arms while she focused her gaze on the doctor's face.

Mark squeezed her arm again and that caught Caitlin's attention.

"What am I doing here, Doctor?" she asked with her face contorted in pain as she still tried to bear what was left of the excruciation in her head.

"We would get to that…" Doctor Mark said. "How does your head feel?" the doctor asked. "The nurse said she heard yelling coming from here…"

"It was my head…" Caitlin said. "There's this pain…"

"Hmm…" Mark hummed. He glanced at her chart and read all that the nurse that had attended to her wrote. The nurse was off duty now as Mark would have liked to talk to her in person. They had said the patient was bought in hysterical, pulling at her hair and shouting unintelligently. Now, that had piqued the doctor's interest but that wasn't something that he'd go into now. Mark glanced at Caitlin and noticed that she was understanding and grasping all that was being said to her, unlike what had been written in her report.

"Can these come off, please?" Caitlin asked as her gentle eyes went down to her wrists.

The nurse that was standing behind the doctor all this while looked at Mark as he looked back at her and nodded with a slow blink of his eyes. He could ascertain that the patient would not be harmful to herself any longer. And she needed to be comfortable to fully recover and to remember what had happened to her to have her there in the situation that she was in.

The nurse walked to the other side of the bed and began working on the cuffs. She clipped off one end, walked over to the other side, and repeated the same action.

Now, Caitlin's hands were free and she rubbed on them gently and raked her fingers through her hair, ending up on the pillow. She stretched a little and winced at the pain that she could feel all over her body. It was as if she had been thrown off a building – that was how she felt within her. Caitlin was full of confusion as she couldn't understand why she'd feel that way.

"Do you recall anything at all?" Mark asked. "Anything that happened to you before you were brought here?" he asked as he took a seat in the chair that was beside the bed. He'd turned it to face her squarely so that he could read every expression that would pass through her face.

There was no response as Caitlin placed the hand that wasn't connected to any drip line behind her head to adjust herself.
