บท 51: Entering the Vortex: Unveiling the Hidden Lab

Isabella and Carla suddenly appeared in front of an old, shabby building right outside the city. Isabella glanced at the building before glancing over at Carla who was still smiling at her.

"Seriously, this is the place where the teleportation station is?"

"Yes, the less conspicuous the building, the smaller the chance of something happening to it, no villain or hero would think to look for such a place without having any knowledge of it, so it's perfect for hiding important stuff, come on, let's go." Carla walked toward the building and went inside, with Isabella following right behind her.

The inside of the building was no different than the outside, the walls were old and in bad shape, nobody lived inside of it, and Isabella could even see a couple of rats.

"They could have cleaned it up at the very least."

"That would defeat the entire purpose." A voice suddenly echoed inside the building, which made Isabella tense up as a man suddenly came out from a nearby shadow that was in front of them.

The shadow rippled as if it were water as the man slowly appeared.

His silver hair was neatly combed back and a pair of sunglasses were present on his face, which was quite weird considering the fact they were inside a dark building with little to no light.

He wore a three-piece suit and gracefully bowed to Carla and Isabella.

"It is a pleasure to see you again Miss Carla, might this be the person you have sent a report about?"

"Yes, this is Isabella, She's a smart cookie, so I thought it would be prompt to have her take the test."

"Since Miss Carla said so, I am certain that she will give the people of the lab a great surprise." The man said before glancing over to Isabella.

"I am Nightshade, the agency has tasked me with protecting this place for a period of time."

"Every important building and area of the agency is always under the watch of one or more villains, the important ones, like this one, need to have at least one S-grade villain present so that the old man in the agency can be certain that nothing bad will happen."

Isabella nodded her head before blinking several times in quick succession.

'This guy is an S-grade villain?'

"Wait, Nightshade, I've heard that name." Isabella suddenly said before her eyes widened.

"The SS-grade villain, Nightshade, could that be you?"

"Seems like the young miss has heard about me, I am honored," Nightshade said as he slightly bowed to Isabella again.

'I … I definitely didn't expect a villain that is known to be the most dangerous assassin in the entire world to be so … elegant, and not crazy at all.' Isabella thought as she nodded at Nightshade and smiled at him.

"Shall we?" Carla asked as Nightshade nodded before walking deeper inside the building.

Isabella followed after them, during which she was lost in thoughts.

'He's being so courteous and polite, is he really like this, or is it because of Carla?'

'She seems to hold quite some sway, he is calling her Miss Carla and it seems like he and the other members of the agency hold her in high regard, just who is she?'

Isabella knew that Carla was not a simple person at all. Carl had briefly spoken about her and mentioned that she was quite powerful and highly ranked, but that he didn't know just how strong she was, nor what her position in the agency was.

Isabella believed that she was perhaps an A-grade villain, which turned to her believing she was an S-grade after she spoke of the lab and the teleportation station, which was information only known to S-grade and above.

But after seeing just how polite Nightshade was being, her previous belief was once again overturned as she now believed that Carla's position in the agency must be quite something.

'Just who is she, and why is she hanging around Carl so much, to go as far as helping him out several times?'

Isabella didn't think that Carla had any hostile intentions toward her or Carl, a person of her status definitely didn't need anything from them, so why was she spending time with Carl?

'Is there something about him that I don't know about?'

'He did defeat a D-grade villain, which is nothing special, even if it was without using an ability.'

'Hmmm … he does have a manual, Carla did say his strength comes from that, is she after that?'

Isabella then shook her head.

'No, she doesn't seem like the kind of person that needs it, not to mention that she definitely has access to manuals thanks to her grade.'

'Carla, just who are you?'

Isabella's thoughts had to end as the three of them went into the basement, which was empty.

Nightshade merely continued walking toward the wall, as did Carla, and as they came right in front of it, they didn't stop.

Isabella's eyes widened as she saw how Nightshade walked through the wall, as did Carla. The wall merely produced a couple of ripples, and Isabella stopped for a moment before walking through it as well.

On the other side of the wall, a completely different area was shown.

Isabella could immediately notice several turrets that were aimed at the wall, as well as walls that were made out of metal. The room they were in was nothing special, it was empty except for the turrets.

Suddenly, a wide laser appeared, which seemed to quickly scan all three of them before a voice was heard.

"Identities confirmed, sir Nightshade, Miss Carla, and Miss Isabella, welcome."

A robotic voice echoed through the room as the wall in front of them suddenly moved. The wall opened, showing an elevator which the three of them entered.

There were no buttons on the elevator, it simply closed after the three of them entered and then it started going down.

The ride down only took 5 seconds, after which they exited, only for Isabella to gulp.

A huge open area was now in front of her,

The underground area was as large as two football stadiums and there were tens of people moving around, doing some calculations and observing the gigantic whirlpool that was in the very center of the area.

It looked like a gate from Stargate, it was slightly larger and circular, but instead of looking like there was water in it, what Isabella could see when staring at the teleportation station was a whirlpool of some energy.

"Welcome to the 4th teleportation station, located about 400 meters below the ground, it's quite difficult for anyone to find out about this place," Carla said with a smile as she glanced at Isabella.

"Wait, 400 meters below ground?" Isabella asked with a shocked expression, to which Carla merely nodded.

"Correct, the elevator is quite fast, huh?"

"Miss Carla, the station is ready to be used, you two can go whenever you want," Nightshade said as he bowed before walking toward the elevator.

"I will be going back to resume my guard duty."

"Of course, thank you Nightshade," Carla said with a smile before walking toward the vortex of energy.

"It might be a bit unrefined, but it does the job well, let's go," Carla told Isabella before grabbing her hand and walking in the vortex.

In an instant, Isabella felt the world shift as she suddenly started spinning around what looked like a black tunnel through which the two were flying.

After a couple of seconds, the two landed on solid ground and Isabella quickly collapsed on her knees. Before anything could happen, a bag was placed on her face, and she vomited.

"The first time is always the hardest, especially with these kinds of teleportation stations." Carla softly said as she waited for Isabella to finish. A couple of people were present as well, but they also patiently waited.

As Isabella finished, Carla merely snapped her fingers, turning the bag of puke in pink mist that quickly dispersed through the area.

"Welcome to the lab, Isabella," Carla said with a smile as Isabella got up before looking around her.

Her eyes widened as she realized they were in the middle of a gigantic building. She could see the cloud by looking up as the walls of the building were made out of glass.

Large staircases connected the many floors that the building had, and everything inside was made out of glass and was transparent. Well, she noticed that when people closed the door of an office, the glass turned foggy and it was impossible to see through it.

"This is the potential new recruit, right?" One of the men that was waiting right below the platform on which the station was asked as Carla nodded at him.

"Yes, she will be taking the test today."

"Alright, let's get it over with already, we can't afford to waste time." Another man, a middle-aged man with a long gray beard said as he looked slightly annoyed.

"Certainly, lead the way," Carla said with a smile, to which the five men responded with confusion.

"Miss Carla, only the girl is allowed further in, you are not a part of the lab, I'm afraid-"

"I said, lead the way," Carla said as her smile disappeared, which made all five suddenly shake.
