บท 8: Promotion

Kureo Mado stared at the blade in Lin Yi's hand and said, "Lin Yi, you put on quite a show. Your Quinque is a Kakuja."

Lin Yi nodded and replied truthfully, "It's made from the Kagune of a Ghoul named 'FoodBird,' known as Jörmungandr."

"It's perfect. Make good use of it!" Kureo Mado's eyes briefly cleared before returning to his usual intensity.

"But don't get too proud. There are more ghouls lurking here, not just the few we encountered earlier. The hidden vermin are alerted as well. Let's pick up the pace and not let them escape," Kureo Mado cautioned.

Lin Yi sighed, glancing at the chaotic surroundings, but he quickly adapted. Unlike others who might be disturbed by the bloodshed, he remained composed.

"The smell of blood is overpowering, and ghouls have a keen sense of smell. They might have already noticed," Lin Yi added.

"That's why we need to act fast. Let's split up. You go left, I'll go right, and we'll thoroughly search this area," Kureo Mado instructed.

Having witnessed Lin Yi's combat skills earlier, Kureo Mado trusted his abilities and decided not to follow him secretly.

"What about the targets?" Lin Yi inquired.

Kureo Mado grinned with a sinister air as he approached a streetlamp. Lin Yi noticed the dried blood stains on Kureo Mado's coat, indicating that it wasn't fresh.

"This is late night in District 1. Once you spot anyone who dares to walk outside, strike directly. Kill them all, regardless of their appearance or age!" After giving his orders, Kureo Mado swiftly departed.

Lin Yi couldn't help but admire Kureo Mado's experience as an investigator. He had a unique sense for hunting ghouls.

That night was destined to be a night of slaughter.

The next day, CCG personnel arrived at the scene, shocked by the situation. Lin Yi and Kureo Mado had killed at least twenty ghouls in a single night. Though these ghouls were not high-ranking, it was still an impressive achievement.

Furthermore, half of the kills were credited to the newly joined investigator—Lin Yi.

This earned Lin Yi a small reputation within the CCG headquarters, and many people knew that a new monster had joined their ranks.

Lin Yi also submitted a battle report to Professor A.

Since these events were publicly known, he saw no reason to conceal them. It was better to go with the flow.

However, Lin Yi kept the fact that Jörmungandr could enhance itself through devouring hidden. Everyone, including Professor A, believed it was a means to maintain the Quinque's effectiveness.

But what troubled the headquarters was that Lin Yi, with his 'Kakuja Quinque,' possessed incredible strength. Every ghoul he killed had their RC Cells and Kagune completely destroyed, causing significant losses for the CCG.

After all, the most effective weapon against ghouls was the Quinque created using their RC Cells.

In the following days, Lin Yi and Kureo Mado roamed between Districts 1 and 2, hunting ghouls. Their cooperation greatly increased efficiency.

"Investigator Lin, you're amazing! You should be getting a promotion soon, right? This was a major ghoul that troubled the entire Investigative Division for a long time. It was just recently classified as an A-rank, and you've already taken care of it," a female clerk in charge of record-keeping exclaimed with admiration and infatuation in her eyes.

"Investigator Mado did most of the work," Lin Yi humbly replied.

Just then, someone next to him called his name, surprising him.

"Investigator Yukinori, what brings you here? Do you have some free time to talk?" Lin Yi asked, puzzled by Yukinori Shinohara's visit.

"Come with me to my office," Yukinori Shinohara said, glancing at the curious onlookers. He led the way, and Lin Yi followed.

"What's going on?" Lin Yi asked as they entered the office. He casually sat down on the sofa, placed an ashtray in front of him, and lit a cigarette.

"It's about your promotion," Yukinori paused, picked up a document from his desk, and handed it to Lin Yi. "You've achieved significant merits recently, and the headquarters has decided to promote you to First-Class Investigator and place you on the Special Class Reserve List."

Being on the Special Class Reserve List meant the headquarters recognized his potential to become a Special-Class Investigator, but he still needed some time for assessment.

"Isn't that too fast?" Lin Yi was taken aback. He had initially thought that becoming a First-Class Investigator would be sufficient. However, he quickly put on a playful smile. "Will my salary increase?"

Looking at Lin Yi's nonchalant expression, Yukinori Shinohara couldn't help but feel helpless. Considering the difficulties Lin Yi faced, he didn't say anything and continued.

"After becoming a First-Class Investigator, you'll be on the same level as Investigator Mado. It wouldn't be suitable for you to continue following him. The headquarters has other plans for you."

So, that was the main point.

Lin Yi raised an eyebrow but remained silent as he looked at Yukinori.

"The headquarters intends to assign you to District 20 as a combat force stationed at the 20th Ward Branch."

District 20, also known as the Stable Zone, is one of the safest areas among the 23 wards of Tokyo, in stark contrast to the dangerous District One. Severe attacks on humans rarely occur there, and there have never been any reports of major ghouls entering the area.

It is indeed more than enough to deploy a First-Class Investigator as a combat force stationed there.

But the problem is...

"Huh? Investigator Yukinori, am I hearing correctly? Why me?" Lin Yi pointed at himself, wearing a puzzled expression.

Even if they need to send combat forces to District 20, logically speaking, it shouldn't be him.

He has gained some fame recently and has continuously achieved military merits. During this time, he has slain many ghouls, so why all of a sudden is he being assigned to a retirement-like job?

"It's not about you; it's about it," Yukinori Shinohara also wore a helpless expression as he looked at the Quinque case next to Lin Yi.
