บท 34: An Irritating Fellow

The young lady of the Saunters family.

While Asher had no way of confirming his suspicions, he was pretty confident of them.

As he was about to shift his eyes from the exotic carriage, Asher happened to spot a few individuals approaching him. The new arrivals were all on horses, and they numbered at least five. Behind them were two lavish carriages making their way towards them. From the arrangement they took, the young man in front happened to be the leader of the group.

Asher narrowed his eyes as he felt that they weren't coming with good intentions.

"Hey, you! Whoever the fuck you are, carry your carriage and leave this instant. This young master wants to park his carriage here." The young man at the lead grinned.

Truthfully, the description 'young man' was quite unnecessary after all, the speaker was barely in his adolescent period, roughly the same age as Asher. Also, from the way he had spoken, it was quite possible that he was the 'young master' he spoke of.

Looking at the sight, Asher felt quite strange about it. This young man was most likely the same as himself, a direct descendant of a noble family. However, unlike Asher, he had left the comfort of his carriage and rode on a horse. This was a bit unexpected.

'Hmm?'

While it might seem like the young teen was paying attention to Asher's entourage, Asher noticed that part of his attention was focused on the Saunters' convoy.

'Ah. I get it. He most likely wants to impress the young lady of the Saunters family by standing out. But why the heck does he want to pick on me? Do I look like a small fry?'

Asher wondered.

"Are you deaf or what, pig brain?" The purported young master spoke up.

Because Asher wasn't paying attention to him, the young teen felt vexed and had jabbed at them.

Meanwhile, Anger was beginning to lose his patience. He would have made a move on the newcomers, but even though he was left in charge of security with Ol' Fang's departure, that didn't mean he could clash with any noble without consideration. Also, Anger wasn't stupid. The Arnhaunt carriage had already parked here for a while. The newcomers came in from the direction of the carriage's door, so this meant that they should have seen the grand emblem of the Arnhaunt family. Despite that, they had still approached them with such gait and attitude. Unless they were stupid, they had to have a proper backing at least on par with the Arnhaunt family.

While Anger was in charge of security, he wasn't charged with dealing with the other noble households.

"And who might your pitiful self be?" Asher countered.

"Heh. So there's a master to this dog. Move your carriage away from this spot and let me park mine. You'd be doing not just yourself a great favour, but also your nine generations of ancestors." The self-proclaimed young master said with a smug.

"If I didn't know any better I would think that you were the son of the king or maybe the heir of some great family." Asher nonchalantly said.

"What would you peasant know? I am Alexander Sutton, of the magnificent Sutton family." The young teen declared with great pride.

"As I said, if I didn't know any better, I would think you were somebody important."

Alexander frowned at Asher's words as he narrowed his eyes at the face revealed through the window. Asher, on the other hand, maintained a stoic face to the glare.

As was previously mentioned there existed five great families alongside the royal family and the three generals, who held up the kingdom in this period. One of the families was the rank number two, the Saunters family. Another was rank number four, the Arnhaunt family. As for the Sutton family, they were rank number five, just beneath the Arnhaunts. They were also the number one rivals of the Arnhaunt family, and it wasn't just because they were close in ranking.

The greatest wealth of the Arnhaunt family was the magic crystal mine which had even attracted the envy of the royal family. However, before the Arnhaunt family came into possession of the duchy, the Sutton family was supposed to be in control of part of the land of Red Maple province, which coincidentally turned out to be the location of the mine, but they rejected ownership of it.

The story was as thus, the Arnhaunt family head and the Sutton family head were in the presence of the king and about to receive their rewards for their contributions in the war. A particular piece of land was presented to the two heads to chose from. One was the Red Maple province and the other was Black Ridge province, a neighbouring province of Red Maple but was a bit better than the latter then.

The Sutton family head was asked to pick first, and he had selected the Black Ridge province as his duchy. In his opinion, it was better than Red Maple, and it was richer in minerals than the latter, making it easier to generate profit and develop. Truthfully, his decision made sense, and it was technically the best choice at the time. However, this was because no one knew the value of the Red maple trees or even the existence of the magic crystal mine. And so, unknowingly, a great profit had slipped from the hands of the family.

Because of this, alongside the fact that both families were close to each other, an intense rivalry existed between the two families. From both the fact that they were competing against each other and the fact that the Suttons felt they had lost out gravely, there was no space for reconciliation between the two families.

"Haha. You seem to be a big guy, huh? Would you mind telling me who you are?" Alexander asked as he ignored Asher's insults.

"Unless you're blind, you should have noticed the emblem on my carriage."

However, Asher knew that Alexander definitely did. The emblem was clear as day and was facing the young noble. If he said he didn't notice it, it would be a blatant terrible lie.

Nonetheless, Asher underestimated Alexander's thick skin.

"Ah? Did I fail to notice that? Hmm, let's see. A grey tree with flourishing branches and leaves. Henry, what family does that stand for?" Alexander asked with a 'curious' expression.

"The Arnhaunt, young master."

One of Alexander's guards replied with a strange smile.

"Oh, it's the great family. Haha, my apologies." Alexander offered a fake laugh.

However, no one else was smiling. The guards on Asher's side were looking at him as if he were a fool, while Asher was wondering whether he had a screw loose.
