According to his own thought-process, The diamond like scales surrounding him should have been a part of himself

Which, by extension, means that his Rebirth Instinct should work and he should have been easily able to pass the first stage of his scale control ability

But, unfortunately, that was not so, The scales seemed to be more of a cloth or armor than a part of himself, as his instincts were completely out of touch with them,

So he had to gruelingly, count his scales using his unique draconic senses of touch,
