บท 77: Broken Dome
Below a huge barricade which looked like a dome of blue energy, a young knight was shouting, his face filled with frustration and eyes tearing, "We're just following protocols kid!" Facing him was Valentina, her face red with anger and her eyes glaring at the knight like she was going to kill him.
After they reached the barricade, the knights stopped them from leaving the high-level area. Even after their requests and explanations, the young knight denied them, which angered Valentina. She began berating the knight by telling him how the knight order was useless and only protected the nobles, leaving the people from mid and low-level area defenseless against the monsters. Even after he explained there were other knights protecting the people, she didn't stop with her angry rant.
Two other knights were watching them with fascination while Cadell and Ouida were standing next to them in silence. "They've been going at it for ten minutes..." Cadell remarked as he turned to Ouida, his eyes begging her to do something about the situation. With a heavy sigh, Ouida moved towards Valentina and stopped her from speaking by covering her mouth.
"Please forgive us for being rude." She smiled at the young knight. "But we have already wasted a lot of time here. Can't you just let us go? I'll make sure you won't get into any trouble."
"Haah..." The young knight sighed. "Sorry kid, but we cannot let anyone out now. We can't make any exceptions. If you really want to go, you'll have to talk to-"
"Why are you guys making so much noise?" The knight was interrupted by a tanned person appearing from behind them. "Night Leader Lonz!" The knights gave him a salute. Nodding his head at the knights, he turned to the three kids before him and stared at them, noticing the weapons they carried. "Cadets? Why are you kids here?"
"We need to go to the low-level right now." Ouida answered.
"Why?" Lonz questioned. "And don't give me stupid answers like you need to protect the people, there are already knights there doing that." He added. Hearing this, the three looked defeated. "You nobles just go back to your mansions. We are here for your protection." Lonz remarked, sounding a bit pissed off. He then turned around and started leaving.
"We're not nobles!" Valentina shouted. "We're from the low-level! We need to go to our house right now!"
Lonz paused and turned around. He looked at them with doubt in his eyes, "What were you doing here then?"
"We were visiting a friend from the academy." Cadell answered. "Please, you have to let us go to our house."
"Haah..." Lonz rubbed his temples. "Sorry but I can't. If you're worried about your family, it will be okay. There are knights there right now, they'll defend your family. You can come with me now, I'll take you somewhere safer."
Valentina and Cadell looked at each other for a brief moment. Then they turned their heads towards Lonz again. "No! Please, we need to go-" But they were interrupted by a sudden boom in the dome.
BOOM BOOM
When they looked up at the dome barrier, they could see it being thrashed by whip like weapons. Looking further, they found out the whips were the tendrils attached to the figure in the sky.
BAM
The tendril came down again and again, easily cracking the dome. "Knights! Ready your weapons!" Lonz growled. He grabbed his silver colored spear, engraved with beautiful designs, and readied himself. Hearing Lonz's order, more knights appeared and armed themselves.
The three cadets also readied their weapons, Valentina with her hammer, Ouida with her whip and Cadell with his short sword.
*BOOM*
The dome finally cracked and the first tendril came down at them. *Clang* As the tendril shot towards Valentina, Lonz appeared before her and parried the tendril, making it shoot towards the ground. "Get back!" He shouted.
More tendrils came raining down from the crack and attacked them. The knights followed their leader and parried the tendrils, shooting them aside. Some knights were unlucky and the tendrils pierced their bodies or appendages, still shooting towards the ground. The three cadets were also parrying the tendrils, holding their own amongst the knights.
The attacks came to a stop after one burst. "Be ready for another attack!" Lonz yelled. "Supports, tend to the wounded knights!" The support team hurriedly made their way towards the injured, trying to get the tendrils off safely.
"The Tendrils!" "Leader! The tendrils!" A support knight and Cadell called out together. He turned to look and saw a knight stuck with a tendril piercing from his thigh and sticking in the ground. The tendril was beginning to glow red. The point at the ground where the tendril was stuck began to crack with red glow coming out of the cracks. "Get away!" Lonz cried out.
But it was too late, The ground exploded and the tendril was retracted back. Then, one after the other, the tendrils began to glow red and the ground began to explode. After the first explosion, the knights and the three cadets took cover on the ground. The rest of the support knights also backed away and took cover.
After the explosions died down, the knights began rising from cover. Lonz also stood up and focused. As the smoke from the explosion began dissipating, they could see red glowing figures. "Ready yourselves!" Everyone readied their weapons at his words.
The smoke died down and they could finally see the monsters like magma people, rushing towards them for an attack. Their eyes widened as they saw the knights who were pierced also turned into these monsters, joining the other monsters in their attack.
