บท 46: Barrier

"Jiten, what happened? Who was that person with you?" asked Alex, brimming with curiosity. Jiten, who had just arrived, replied, "Well, I fell down, and that person happened to be in my cabin."

Alex's curiosity piqued even further. "Did you make new friends?" he inquired, his eyes gleaming with excitement. Jiten grinned mischievously and responded, "You could say that."

As the trio began walking away from the Ferris wheel, Jiten turned to Emily and Alex, his curiosity getting the better of him. "Do you guys know what happened and why it stopped?" he asked, his tone filled with intrigue.

Emily thought for a moment before answering, "I think there was a mana failure. That's why it came to a halt."

Jiten's face lit up with recognition as he remembered something important. With a mischievous glint in his eyes, he decided to probe further. "So, did you guys have fun up there, all alone?" he asked, a playful smirk playing on his lips.

Emily and Alex couldn't help but blush at the question, their cheeks turning a rosy shade. Sensing that his question had hit the mark, Jiten was ready to continue teasing them, but before he could, Emily quickly interjected, "Well, guys, it was a lot of fun, but it's getting late, and Alex needs to rest for his matches tomorrow. We should call it a night and get some sleep."

Alex nodded in agreement, acknowledging the truth in Emily's words. "Yeah, you're right. We need to be well-rested. Goodnight, emily." After that he looked to jiten with a teasing face and said "go home and sleep well, because tomorrow we got more betting to do" listening to this jiten smiled and said "that's the spirt fire boy!"

With that, the group dispersed, heading home for the night. Jiten, left with his thoughts, couldn't help but wear a satisfied grin on his face as he contemplated the day's events.

The next day was Wednesday, which meant it was a free study day for everyone except the heirs, who were obligated to attend Olana's class first thing in the morning.

When Alex arrived at the classroom, he found Emily engrossed in a conversation with Max and Samantha. As soon as Emily noticed Alex, she smiled and remarked, "Always the last one..." Alex scratched his head sheepishly and greeted the three of them.

Max turned to Emily and eagerly asked, "So, Emily, did you watch my matches yesterday?" Emily, with a smile, replied, "Of course, I watched all of you. But my favorite was Samantha's performance, showcasing that girls are superior." Samantha nodded in appreciation, proud of her accomplishment.

"True, but it was me that made Jiten all that money yesterday," said Alex proudly. Hearing this, Max chimed in, "Emily, if you want to win money, bet on me. I will win for you." Alex, not reading the intent behind Max's words, looked at Max playfully and said, "That's nice, but what if you're placed against me? Are you going to pay Emily for her loss?" Max's expression shifted, to an angry one.

Before this conversation could continue, Olana appeared and said, "Good morning, everyone. Let's get inside. I know that three of you are in the tournament, so I will make this class fast."

The group entered the classroom, after they settled in their seats, Olana began her class. She started by saying, "ok, everyone. Today, we will delve into more advanced techniques from the sacred books left by the elemental heroes. As you all can now activate a small portion of your elemental power, it's time to introduce more complicated procedures."

The four listened attentively, their curiosity piqued by the prospect of learning advanced techniques. Olana continued, "One of the texts contains information on creating a defensive barrier using your elemental power. According to the hero who left this knowledge, to perform this barrier, you need to activate your elemental power and focus on the things you want to protect with all your heart. It can be people, moments, objects, pets, or anything that holds significant importance to you."

Excitement and determination filled the room as the students realized the potential of this new technique. They understood that protecting what they cherished most was a crucial aspect of their journey as heirs.

Olana went on to explain the finer details of creating the barrier, discussing the concentration required and the various ways the barrier could manifest based on the unique characteristics of each elemental power.

She emphasized the importance of practice and patience in mastering this technique.

After half an hour of attempting to create the defensive barrier, no one had produced successful results. Olana was prepared to give new instructions when Alex became the first to activate the barrier. He conjured a ball of fire, and Olana cast a simple arcane shot at it. As the spell made contact, the fireball dissipated.

"Amazing, Alex! Great job!" exclaimed Olana, impressed by his accomplishment. Alex opened his eyes but spoke with a tinge of sadness, saying, "Thank you." Sensing his melancholy, Olana inquired, "What's wrong?"

Alex looked at her and replied, "If I had known about this earlier, maybe they would still be here..." Olana understood his grief and reassured him, saying, "Don't think like that. You need to train and expand your abilities. You still have a lot of people right here to protect." Alex, with teary eyes, nodded and resolved to try again.

Next, Emily stepped forward and, after some struggle, successfully created a fully transparent wall. It was so subtle that only those paying close attention could see it. Impressed by Emily's progress, Olana tested the barrier again with an arcane shot, and once more, the shot was dispersed. "Wow, amazing, Emily! Let's work on making it bigger and thicker," Olana exclaimed with a smile. Emily felt elated and nodded in response.

Observing Emily's success, Samantha turned to her and asked, "How did you do that?" Emily blushed slightly and explained, "First, I tried to think of my parents, but the memories weren't vivid enough. So, I focused on more recent moments with someone who was genuinely kind to me." Emily's face flushed with embarrassment as she finished her explanation.

Inspired by Emily's words, Samantha closed her eyes and attempted the same. However, her memories of her parents were not as vivid, and other recollections felt distant. Finally, she recalled a particular moment but quickly dismissed it. After some contemplation, she decided to give it a try. To her surprise, a protective bubble formed in front of her. Witnessing Samantha's success, Olana attempted to break the barrier with an arcane shot, only to find it held strong. "Fantastic work, Samantha! It appears very resistant," praised Olana.

As Samantha opened her eyes, she was filled with anger, glaring at the barrier in front of her. Max, noticing everyone else's success, grew impatient and questioned Samantha, "How did you do it?" Samantha, still agitated, replied, "Try to think of a recent moment with someone who was kind to you." Max was taken aback by Samantha's demeanor and asked, "Is everything okay?" Realizing she had let her anger get the best of her, Samantha smiled at Max and said, "Yes, sorry if I was rude. I believe you can do it, Max!"

Max nodded, determined to succeed in creating the defensive barrier. He closed his eyes and delved into his memories, searching for a significant moment of kindness. His mind wandered through various encounters, but none seemed potent enough to evoke the necessary emotions. Frustration began to creep in as he struggled to find the right memory.

Just when Max was about to give up, a particular memory surfaced—one where Emily had invited him to join her for lunch. It was a simple memory, but it left a lasting impression on Max. Focusing on that moment, he channeled his elemental power and visualized a protective barrier forming around him.

To his surprise, vines emerged from the ground, intertwining and weaving together to create a sturdy and impenetrable barrier. Excitement filled the air as Max opened his eyes and saw the barrier intact. Olana, impressed by his achievement, exclaimed, "Well done, Max! You did it!"

The class observed in awe as Max's barrier demonstrated its strength and resilience. The vines pulsated with energy, displaying a remarkable defensive capability. Max couldn't help but feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction at his newfound ability.

Olana, with a knowing smile, addressed the class once again. "Each of you has discovered the power within you, the power to protect and defend. Remember, the strength of your barriers depends on the depth of your connection to the memories that fuel them. Harness that connection, and you will wield an impenetrable shield. You are now free to leave, but I must remind you all to be cautious and avoid injuries during the upcoming tournament."

The students nodded, acknowledging the importance of Olana's words. They gathered their belongings and prepared to depart, their minds filled with determination and a renewed sense of purpose. They understood that their training had only just begun and that the challenges ahead would require them to push their limits further.
