Cael remembered the day he used the Arc Lightning for the first time like it was yesterday. The spell was one of the few fifth circle spells from the Grand Library; and as soon as his mana control and reserves allowed him, Cael latched onto it.
It sounded great on paper. Summon lightning that will arc towards your enemy, then jump to other enemies in the vicinity. And the circle of the spell made it a truly devastating addition to Cael's list of spells. Its only downside was its short range—you had to stand several steps away from your target, at most, or it would've lost most of its power.
For the first time, Cael used an innocent tree as his target. As the next events showed, it was a terrible idea.
The arc of lightning—which looked more like a horizontal thunderbolt—so bright that it left white dots in Cael's eyes, struck the tree. In that instant, it exploded with hundreds of splinters and pieces of wood, flying like arrows in all directions.
Fun fact! When a lightning strikes a tree, it doesn’t just burns—it explodes. The heat of lightning turns water and sap inside a tree in steam, which rapidly expands, producing this effect.
In the meantime, humans can get everything from normal burns, lung burns, heart attacks, contusions, ruptured eardrums, and more.
