"Huh...?" Chester grumbled and stared at me in disbelief.
"I'm asking you to show me your magic! It would be difficult for us to work together if we don't know each other's capabilities!" I angrily explained for the second time.
I need to confirm Chester's abilities first before we head into the upcoming battle. I need to build my confidence in him even just a little, in order for me to smoothly traverse the battlefield. I want to know if he can actually protect himself at the minimum if a situation comes when I have to leave him alone.
In order to do that, I took him outside the town. Since he's apparently the disciple of a higher ranking mage in the capital, he might know some powerful wide-scale spells. It would be dangerous for us to test his magic in a populated area.
"Are you telling me to waste my mana for that kind of reason?" he growled.
"Don't be so stubborn! You'll have plenty of time to recover your mana later, so go on!"
"Grr! What a horrible woman... You look young, but you really are a hag."
"You say that even though you want me to service you at night?" I rebutted, irritated by his backhanded insult.
"Service? What does that mean, master?" Log came with us too, and he suspiciously asked as soon as he heard the mention of night service.
"Tsk! Fine! If that's what going to shut you up! I'll show you!" Chester shouted, a vein popping out of his forehead.
"Good," crossing my arms, I replied.
With a bitter look on his face, Chester went to position far away from us. There's no reason for him to do that, but thinking he prefers to cast his spell with no one nearby, I let him go.
After pausing for effect, he lifted his staff and recited the incantations. And then...
"Ice magic: Ice Spikes!"
As Chester casted his spell, multiple ice spikes manifested in the air and shot straight at their intended target.
"Kuh!"
Instead of targeting the huge boulder across his direction, Chester shot the sharp spikes at me.
He caught me off guard for just a second, but the moment I realized what he was doing, I immediately casted a magic shield around myself and Log. The ice spikes shattered instantly on impact, its fragments scattering around and turning back into visible particles of mana.
"What are you doing...?"
"Hmph...! You said you wanted to see my magic, so I simply showed it to you," he said as an awkward snicker formed on his mouth.
He must be expecting me to get harmed a little and panic. His intention is clear from the bewildered look in his eyes. He definitely was not expecting me to get out of his spell unscathed.
"Kuku... I thought you were annoying, but I didn't expect you to go this far..." I inwardly chuckle.
"You... You bastard! Why did you do that!?"
Log took a bit of time to process what happened, but as soon as he did, he immediately did a stance. He was ready to pounce at Chester, but I blocked his way to stop him.
"Master! That bastard just attacked us! I'm going to slice his throat open!"
Chester was visibly shaken from Log's declaration. Log never showed him any amount of malice before, so he must be quite surprise at just how terrifying he could be when he let's out his killing intent.
"It's fine," I patted Log's head to calm him down.
"K-kuku... You should really put a leash on your dog," Chester stuttered, obviously still terrified.
"Don't be mistaken, Log's not my dog, he's my student. Instead of convincing me of putting a leash on anyone, shouldn't you apologize for what you just did first?"
"Huh? Why would I apologize for that? It was you who ask me to do it in the first place," he smugly replied.
Fufu... The audacity of him to put the blame on me... Well, it doesn't matter. Whether he apologizes or not, what I would do to him now won't change.
I actually could've forgiven him if I was his target alone, but he did not hesitate to shoot his magic even when Log was nearby.
I need to teach him a lesson.
"Light magic: Divine Retribution!" with a rare serious tone, I shouted the name of my spell.
Hundreds of glowing spell rings circled around Chester. Each of of them has the power to obliterate a single warrior out of existence, all of them combined can flatten a mountain.
"W-what the hell is this!?"
"Kuku! You really pissed me off, kid!"
"I-Is this your doing!? That's impossible!"
"Say, how about I show you my magic this time?"
"Y-You're kidding, right...? S-Stop it!"
Sensing the gravity of the situation, Chester's face began to pale. Even Log couldn't help but fear the amount of large magic circles appearing around Chester. He certainly never saw anywhere as big and as many of them at once pointed at a single person.
"W-Wait a moment! I'll do it! I'll apologize!" he pitifully screamed.
"Fufu..."
It's too late for that...
"Eek...!"
Noticing what my intention was from my eyes, Chester's face became even more pale. The next moment, he let out the contents of his stomach and passed out, unconscious.
I think I made a mistake with Chester... There are already too many characters this volume. What's your opinion on the story so far? Please leave a comment. It might motivate me to write more chapters.
