บท 13: Ch. 7 Part 1
At the Village.
The villagers watched excitedly when they saw a horse galloped into their village pulling a carriage. The village peasants don't often see carriages, and some even had never seen a horse carriage before only those who mostly go into the town. The only rides of the peasants are the bull or donkey carts and even that not everyone could afford, only those considered well off in the villages could afford carts. They could only watch enviously at the horse carriage as it slowed down, " where do you think the carriage is headed to? " someone asked in the crowds. It's not everyday they see a horse carriage in their village, and when that happens it's when a member of a peasant family in the village had it well.
So they were very envious thinking which family had made it well this time around " ai, ai, ai, maybe it's here for the boy Juyan from the Fu family house.... ai, i heard that he has gotten a job in the county town itself. Ah aunty Zhou is really blessed this time, when will it be my turn too? " "ah, i also heard the news before, but i only thought aunty Zhou was just gloating. But it seems to be true." The villagers watched with envy whispering amongst themselves when the carriage suddenly stopped in front of them, they looked curiously as the window curtain was raised from inside and a young man stretched out his neck.
" Aunties, please can you point me to doctor Lin's house? " the clerk who poked out his head from the small window space saluted and inquired politely. The villagers where confused when they heard his question, " wasn't he here for the Fu family? " a middled aged person asked " who's doctor Lin? " a young man who came to join in the fun added. He saluted to the clerk " this sir, there's only one doctor in this our small village and he is called doctor Huang. We don't know any doctor Lin here " the young answered very politely. The clerk looked at him confused, the address given to him by Lin Yu'an was Yuluo village, and the sign board outside at the entrance had big characters of Yuluo village written on it in black so he was sure that he came to the right place.
" this young man must be mistaken, there's definitely a doctor Lin from your Yuluo village... Ah yes, yes, he says i should ask about his wife Yu ger! " the clerk said to them and they all looked at him as if he had lost his mind. If he was talking about the Yu ger they knew, then wasn't that the waste Lin! " ah isn't that the waste Lin Yu'an's wife? Sir you're really mistaken, that Lin Yu'an isn't a doctor! " they gave the clerk sympathetic looks thinking he must've been deceived and played by Lin Yu'an, " what change ah! he's still going around deceiving people, he's still a waste and will always be! " The clerk frowned upon their words feeling annoyed at how they were badmouthing his new idol, he thought they must be talking about someone else because there was no way the doctor Lin he saw saving someone not long ago was a waste whom they were talking about.
He choose not to ask much and said " just take me to Yu ger, I'll judge for myself whether I've come to the wrong place or not " the young man nodded and walked in front of the carriage which followed behind slowly, another young man slowly left the crowds following to watch the excitement ran ahead towards Lin Yu'an's house.
" Yu ger! Yu ger! It's me aunt Zhang, i just came back from the town. " Yu ger walked out of the room followed by the twins when he heard the voice of aunt Zhang. Seeing him walk out, aunt Zhang walked into the front yard and quickly fetched a stool for the both of them. " you shouldn't have come out, i was about to come into the room. You're not in a good health, you know! " aunt Zhang scolded. " Li'an, Luo go and play, let me talk with your aunt. " the twins nodded and went to a corner in the yard to play leaving Yu ger and aunt Zhang alone. "aunt Zhang don't worry I'm feeling a bit better now, you know i won't harm myself" he comforted but aunt Zhang was still not convinced. "anyway i bought all the medicines prescribed by doctor Huang, I'll make them for you to start taking. Ah! yes, there's 3 taels of silvers left after buying the medicines."
Aunt Zhang informed him, Yu ger nodded. "aunt Zhang you left very early for town today for my troubles, keep the change for yourself. I know i can't repay you for everything you've...." "Yu ger!" aunt Zhang called out in anger startling him, he turned towards aunt Zhang who's face had blackened and was looking angry.... Yu ger knew he messed up "what is payments between us, are you drawing a line between us?" aunt Zhang asked annoyed "no, no, no, aunt Zhang that's not it. Don't misunderstand me, how can I bear to do such thing as draw a line between us. I know things haven't been good for you lately, even though you don't tell me and hide it, aunt Zhang I'm not a child and neither am I an idiot i could see things clearly. So i want aunt Zhang to keep the silvers from the bottom of my heart, don't think of it as charity think of it as a filial piety from a child his mother." Yu ger said with emotions which brought tears into aunt Zhang's eyes. "wooo, my dear child is too filial to this old woman. Since it's a filial piety from my child i won't return it, I'll keep 2 taels and use 1 taels to settle the debt with doctor Huang." she suggested but Yu ger shook his head in disagreement. "I'll settle doctor Huang myself, Li..... Lin Yu'an gave me some silvers before going out today."
A small blush appeared under his eyes saying which shocked aunt Zhang, the child who was always without emotions just blushed. Aunt Zhang was very glad to see that and thanked the heavens in her heart. "he did? that's good, good! the heavens hasn't forsaken you my child. They brought Ayu'an's mind back home to you." she cheered. Yu ger didn't think so but he still nodded, in his heart he knew the reason for Lin Yu'an's change. "ai, you should've seen the quality of fabrics he bought you and the twins, they were the best in the whole town when I went to inquire about them, they cost 3 taels a yard! and he bought many for you and the kids to make sets of clothes. Ah he even gifted me the same, I'll make winter sets, spring sets and summer sets of clothes with them. Give me about a week and I'll finish them all." aunt Zhang went about talking excitedly, Yu ger was also very happy but he still showed indifference and just nod to her words.
"ah i heard Ayu'an hit some preys in the mountain today? " " how did you know? " aunty Zhang had a look of disgust hearing Yu ger's " isn't it said by the villagers... they're so envious and greedy. Ah! so what if your family's Ayu'an hit some preys! just a bunch of greedy thoughts. i heard aunty Zhou of the Fu family behind my house approached your family's Ayu'an for the preys, but ah, she wasn't given anything. Even though she had been gloating that her family Juyan had gotten a job from the county town, when i came back i overheard her quarrelling and crying to her family head and Juyan to hit her a prey or buy pork from the butcher for her, it's so disgusting! ah!" aunt Zhang said very disgusted and sneered. Yu ger was shocked, he didn't know that such had happened, and also he didn't really get along with the villagers like he did with aunt Zhang except for a few but no one informed. Well not that it mattered because he knew the now Lin Yu'an was different and looked like he didn't really want to get involved with the villagers.
"Lin Yu'an, he gave all the preys to me and the twins to cook with." Yu ger said to aunt Zhang not knowing whether he was trying to quench aunt Zhang's worries, or he was trying to assure himself. "really? he did that? ah, good, good, he should give the preys to his wife rather than those awful people" she exclaimed happily and glad. Yu ger went to the kitchen and brought out a fat hare to aunt Zhang "you take this away, since he gave them to me then i could do as i please... he won't mind." seeing that she was going to refuse he continued "there are still four preys left, the twins and i can't finish all. It would go bad if left and not used" aunt Zhang was reluctant but she agreed and took the prey. Taking the prey in his hand, she was so excited that she wanted to go and share the good things with her family in a hurry, just as Yu ger was escorting her to the door. A young man ran in front of them behind the gate startling then both, " good heavens! where are you running to in such a hurry, Juyan of Fu family!" aunty Zhang exclaimed frightened.
"oh aunt Zhang you're here, you don't know what is happening." he said in a disrespectful tone after hearing aunt Zhang's question. Yu ger and aunt Zhang raised their eyes and glanced at him in doubt. Juyan snickered "there's a horse carriage heading here to Yu ger for your waste husband! who said he has changed? he's still deceiving people in town, just wait and see you'll be carried away with your two children, maybe your family's waste might even be taken to the county town and locked up with the yamen "Juyan said gloating, he didn't come to warn Yu ger in good heart, he just came to make fun of him.
Aunt Zhang was stunned and scared from his words, but Yu ger had no emotions showing. He really didn't believe that to be the case, just when aunt Zhang was about to inquire more they saw the carriage approached and stop a few distance away from the house along with some villagers who followed along and came to surround the place. Some even sent for both the village head and doctor Huang, the door of the carriage was opened by the coachman and a young man dressed not too lavishly jumped down. A young man amongst the villagers pointed to Yu ger, the clerk thank him and made his way to the house. He looked at the almost broken down house in doubt thinking that why would a great doctor like Lin Yu'an who charged a lot for a treatment live in such a place, but he didn't show it on his and came to a stop in front of Yu ger. "this brother, may i ask if you're Yu ger the fulang of doctor Lin?" the clerk saluted and ask very very politely thinking if he was at the right place he should scurry favor with such a great doctor's fulang!
