The plane ride mood after the bomb my father dropped was sour. My mother lost all interest in her book and was now just listening to music blank faced.
I could tell she had a lot to say but wanted to calm down before she said anything.
My father continued to type away on his laptop but despite his stony face I could tell he too was not thinking of his task.
As for me. I just promised myself to not drink this whole time we were in Spain. Not even a glass of wine.
I knew my temper and myself. Sure I could handle many drinks fine and still be sober but whenever I was in a foul mood my drinking limit becomes nonexistent. I then can't control what I do or say.
If it was about relationships or anything similar I would no doubt blab my mouth so it was better to keep quiet and just wait out my time. Besides none of them scared me.
So I just slept to pass the time.
Spain during November was pretty much like our weather back home. It was cooler indicating that winter was coming. My mother brought her winter jacket but I was fine with my hoodie and a canvas work jacket.
It was around late lunch early evening when we arrived so by the time we got to the house, dinner would be served.
That was something I was looking forward to. My abuelita made the best food and even though I was not starving, my mouth watered at the thought.
All the luggage was stuffed into the car that was promised for us. I think landing eased my mothers mood as she was back to her usual personality and did not seem bothered anymore.
This also seemed to have appeased my dad as he was not as tense as before. As we approached the roads which led to my abuelitas house my father tapped me on the shoulder.
My mother had taken a nap during the car ride so it was quiet. "Listen I know you told me that you are seeing someone. Would you share who she is if they asked you? Or do you want to keep that to yourself for now? I don't want to pry but I want to be in the same page so incase they try to isolate us we are all on the same page."
He whispered quietly to not disturb anyone.
"Here is the thing if I say that I am seeing someone it's placing unnecessary eyes on me and my girl but if I don't then I have no doubts they will try to intervene. So my plan is to sprinkle a bit of both. Show signs of being taken but neither confirm or deny."
It was my safest bet. Of course I had a week until I was over there but still I needed to already plan ahead. Also my behavior would not be any different if I acted the way I told my dad. I often played coy with my family so they wouldn't suspect a thing.
I considered the different measures I would take to get my message across. Each one coming to mind easily.
"Ok sounds good. Then when your mother wakes up I will let her know what we thought of."
I gave him a thumbs up and went back to listening to my music.
Finally we had arrived at my abuelitas house. Her home was full of life with many lights on and overflowing with plants.
"Hija!" My abuelita went straight for my mother giving her a tight hug. It had been years since they last seen each other and as the only child, I knew it must have been hard having her away.
"Como están?" < How is everyone doing? > Due to the weather she was wearing a knitted sweater with some pants and sheepskin boots. Her eyes were bright and her cheeks rosy.
"Bien mama! Y usted?" < Good mom! And you? > She rubbed her shoulders briskly attempting to warm her up. My abuelita laughed heartily before cupping my mothers cheeks. " I am well now that you are here."
She then turned to my father and Iand gave us each a strong hug. "Mis hijos! Ustedes son más guapos que la última vez que los vi." < My boys! You guys are more handsome than the last time I saw you." >
"Gracias suegra. Usted también te miras más linda." < Thank you mother in law. You as well look more lovely. > "Gracias abuelita. Usted también te miras muy linda. Te extrañaba mucho." < Thank you grandma. You as well look very lovely. I missed you a lot. >
She rushed us inside to get out of the cold and the warmth coming from her home embraced us.
I could already smell the food but before I could rush to get a bite my grandmother pulled me aside.
"Dean how are things going with the girl?" Her voice was low and she waited until my parents were farther ahead before she spoke.
I had forgotten that I had mentioned Celeste to her considering all that happened in between.
So it took me a second to recover from her question. "Oh yeah, things are good, really good. We kind of confessed to one another. I couldn't be more happier. However much like before please keep this information to yourself. My parents don't know about this."
She beamed and squeezed my shoulders while dancing in place. "There you go. And of course I would not breathe a word. Especially to those brujas." < witches. >
I was happy that at least one member of my family was on my side but her shade at the end threw me off.
"Brujas? Who are we talking about?"
She looked around as though she thought someone would listen in. "Don't tell your dad but right now I am a bit upset at them."
" I thought you guys got along?"
"We do generally. But recently I heard some unkind words from them regarding me not getting remarried. I don't think they know I heard them but also I don't know how long they have thought this way. They are like witches brewing gossip and spite for someone they don't even know."
