23.62% I WANT THE DEVIL NOT THE VAMPIRE / Chapter 30: 30

บท 30: 30

(Adriel's POV)

Letting her go on that mission alone was unsettling to me but there wasn't another option, I needed Allesio to be by myself because I was already injured severely and I was awake throughout the previous night.

It came so unexpectedly, just after I danced with Sage at the Princess's birthday, a report came to me that there were knights from another kingdom surrounding us and I wondered what was going on.

I sent him to inform the King, and the king instructed him to leave the palace immediately with the Princess and I saw that Sage left with them as well.

Once they had gone the King went to the center of the event and stood with a glass in his hand, he struck the spoon and all attention was on him.

"I am afraid that the party has to end now, I will put this as simply as possible but I want you all to remain calm and collected."

I knew he was about to tell them that the kingdom was under attack and I felt it was a bad idea because there was no way we could expect everyone in the room to remain calm when they heard that their lives were at stake.

"The kingdom is under attack," he said and there was pin-drop silence which I had never expected. I thought everyone was going to run all over the place screaming in fear but they were all in shock.

"So remain here and you will be safe, however, if anything happens don't hesitate to save yourself." I liked how he spoke about it without mincing his words.

I went outside the hall and out of the Palace and the first thing that greeted me was an arrow shot right into my arm, the pain was excruciating but I pulled it out and looked in the direction where it had been shot from.

I saw a knight run into the trees but I didn't know what he looked like because it was dark and it was foolish to run after him so I didn't, instead I ran back into the palace and picked up my shield and spear.

Other knights who were inside the palace prepared themselves and went out with me, it was an unexpected war so there was no time to strategize, we went out to use our brains.

The mistake I made was that I left the Palace with nothing but mere guards to protect it and when I remembered it was too late, the palace had already been attacked when I ran back to it after about thirty minutes of hunting down the opponents in the dark.

The palace looked like a complete mess and I was scared that the King was killed, the hallway was empty and I wondered what happened to all the villagers who were there not too long ago celebrating the Princess's birthday.

I hadn't walked for so long when I was pushed to the ground from behind, my swords flew out from my hand and landed somewhere in the middle of the hallway, and what shocked me the most was that as soon as it landed, tons of spears fell from the roof all faced downwards and I knew I was going to die if I had been there.

I turned around to see the man who pushed me to the ground and it was a palace guard.

"What is wrong with you!" I yelled at him and the right thing to have done was thank him for saving my life but they were used to my harsh words so it didn't matter.

"I am sorry sir, I thought you were an enemy," he said to me with respect.

"Well, I am not an enemy!" I roared, I didn't understand why I was so furious at that point.

"I apologize, let me take you to the King, he told me to do so once I see you, my lord," he told me and I ordered him to take me to them at once which he did.

I had only been to that part of the Palace once, it had a spiral staircase that led downwards towards a chamber where the King was hidden with his wife.

"Adriel!" He exclaimed the moment he had set eyes on me.

"I am happy to see that you are fine my King, the battle is crucial outside and it seems it has swept away the inside as well," I said to him.

" Yes, many of my people have been captured because of my father's promise."

First, it was almost laughable that he called the Aeradonians his people because he had never really cared about them, he used them as slaves. Even Sage wasn't brought to the palace on her own accord.

I remembered how she was captured by guards alongside several other girls and was forced to serve the Princess, the other girls were sent off one after another or were given new things to do and left Sage alone to serve the Princess as a direct handmaid.

Secondly, he mentioned his father's promise and that wasn't the first time I heard that word. Before my father died a few days before the war that killed him broke out, he had spoken to me about the king's promise to the Tersians.

At that time, the king was King Romeo's father and he had made a promise to give the Tersians some land for farming halfway into the King across the Nyle River and that was because the Tersians struggled with their farming. After all, their land was cursed by the gods.

Out of generosity, the King decided to help, but the Tersians refused his help and I wondered why, so when King Romeo said the war was related to his father's promise, I wanted to know what was happening.

"What is the cause of the war, your majesty?" I asked him.

"That is not important right now, I want you to go and make sure that my daughter is safe, go to the sorcerer's cottage at once! " He commanded me and I left immediately because the king never repeated himself.
