บท 154: Chapter 151

I hadn't been serious about going over to Miles'. It had just been something I had said to avoid having questions thrown my way, because if I had said I was going out to get some fresh air then it would have sounded suspicious. But the second I exited the gate I saw Miles across the street, and even from that distance I could obviously tell that he was not happy. He kicked at some imaginary thing and literally yelled out his frustration. Narrowing my gaze, I wondered whether or not to approach him. It was the first time I had seen him upset and I wasn't the best at such things. And Miles had never come across as the type of person to get seriously mad. He was a people's person. A member of the football team and among those kids who most just wanted to be associated with in one way or another because it would mean that they were in with a very elite crowd. He walked over to the side of the street and sat down on this elevated part made of concrete, taking out his phone and focusing all his attention on it. I looked back at my house, then I caught my bottom lip between my teeth and after two seconds of thinking it over, I walked to him.

I didn't say anything at first, I just casually sat down beside him and let my arms rest on my knees. He turned to me, then he gave me a one-sided smile and asked me what was up.

" I feel like I should be asking you that. Just saw you arguing with the air, you good?"

I could tell he didn't like the fact that I had seen him, he laughed a short humourless laugh and after a quick shake of his head he said, " It's all good, "

I nodded, secretly feeling thankful that he hadn't decided to share because then I'd have been clueless as to what I ought to say to him. He was dressed in a blue pair of ripped jeans with these chains at the side. Sneakers on his feet. I had been over at his house just once, the layout was literally just like ours. I guess all the houses there just looked alike, but you could tell that the furniture and layout had been thought of very expertly. Plus unlike ours, theirs felt more like a home. He was an only child but there was just this vintage feeling I got when I was there. It was obvious that a family lived there. There were countless photos on the walls to prove it. And in his room I had gotten to realize that Miles was either obsessed with shies and clothes or he was planning in opening up a store one day and he just didn't have any other storage apart from his room. It had been neat, unlike mine, but one wall had literally been converted into a large rack filled with sneaker boxes. He'd said something about them being limited edition but I wasn't really into all that. When it came to shopping, I just bought whatever caught my eye without caring much about what label it was.

And even though I was supposed to be focused more on his state of anger, I was being distracted by the shoes he had on. He and Dave hated each other but they definitely had something in common. They cared about their looks a great deal. I locked my fingers together, then I glanced back at my house, knowing that I had to get back pretty soon. If Kyle realized I had left then he was gonna get upset for sure. He'd assume I had abandoned him there intentionally.

But then I felt guilty about just standing and walking away, Miles would have definitely found it weird. I already regretted having walked over there in the first place, now something was urging me to ask him what was wrong. He had placed his phone on the concrete beside him and was busy staring at the empty space straight ahead. Then I thought of something I had wanted to ask him for a while but had never gotten the chance to do so. He however spoke before I did.

" 1997 air Jordan 12, " he told me, and when he saw the perplexed look on my face he gesyired to the shoes he had on and said he'd seen me admire them.

" I have an extra pair if you want em. " It was basically evening, but the stud in his ear was still glinting. Meaning that the stone in it wasn't fake. Because Miles never went for the fake items.

" Just like that? You'd give them up?"

" Sure, I never wear them. "

" Yet you bought them. "

" They were meant to be for display purposes only, it's why I bought two pairs. One to wear, one to look at. "

" That's alright, thanks for the offer though. "

He nodded, he has clearly gotten a haircut recently, he looked good. I didn't know what was troubling him, but I was certain that it had nothing to do with a girl. That's just one thing I was sure of, despite what Miles went through, he was never going to get to the point of being gloomy because of girl issues.

" My folks set up cameras around the house, can you fucking believe that shit? "

Well that explained things. And had my dad done the same thing then I would have been mad as well. Although it was also understandable since even though the area was well protected and safe, one could never be too sure.

" That why you're so bummed out?"

" No! I mean sort of. They should have atleast told me that they'd done that. "

" You weren't aware?"

" Hell no! And last night they weren't around so I organized a little get together with a small group of friends. "

" The one you invited me to. "

" Same one. Thank God you couldn't make it, they'd have made sure you never stepped foot near the house again. "

" I'm guessing you guys weren't drinking coffee and making conversation?"

" Nope, Will's guy hit us up with some coc, I bought some liquor and we just chilled, you know?"

I kept in mind the fact that his dad was a preacher. I'd only seen his parents from across the street, I'd never actually talked to them. But they seemed like decent individuals. But no parent would react calmly to watching recorded proof of their allegedly well-mannered son as he drunk and did drugs. and boy did Miles drink! He could down an entire glass of whiskey like it was orange juice. He'd once chugged down my entire flask at school in between lessons and there had been utterly no reaction. And that flask may seem small but it could hold quite an amount of liquor.

" I'm grounded for two months. And that's them being nice and considerate. I need a fucking drink, got your flask on you by any chance?"

I shook my head and he sighed out of disappointment. Then he looked back at his house and cursed. Apart from being grounded, his car keys had been taken away as well, his mum would be dropping him off starting the following day. And what made him so upset was that she had said she'd be having a word with the principal to ask him to keep an eye on Miles. After hearing all that his current mood suddenly seemed understandable.

" I can't believe this is happening! They will never trust me again. "

I suppose what people said was true, the teenage years were definitely some of the hardest ones for parents and children both. It was when most relationships were ruined to the extent that they couldn't be fixed. Miles was the same age as Kyle and I, it was becoming obvious that sixteen in particular was just an awful phase to go through. He cursed at the cameras, but I guess he was just angry at himself deep down. He had done something that had gotten him into trouble, now the difference between Miles and I was that he admitted to being the one in the wrong. He owned up to it, literally told me himself that he was trying to think of a way to apologize to his parents once they cooled off because he couldn't handle them staying mad at him. Perhaps because they were so close, despite them having no clue of who the real Miles was, they still had a nice and admirable relationship.

" I wish I was more like you, " he confessed, and when I asked him what he meant he explained, saying " You can just shrug things off you know, like that time we were cleaning your bike and your dad came over and asked you to go study, and you just said you wouldn't." I had never ever considered anything about that situation some days ago, but it had obviously been stuck on his mind.

" I'mma head back in before my mum suggests that my dad prays for me again . "

My brows widened for a short while at his words but I controlled the reaction. I still had something to ask him.
