บท 42: Chapter 42: Nick’s Plea

Once we’re done in Maggie’s, we shift and head back to Nick’s car. As far as we can tell, no one followed us to Maggie’s.

As wolves, neither of us can talk, so the trip back gives me plenty of time to think.

Is this place worth risking my life for? Even that is a generous way of putting it. I wouldn’t just be risking my life. I’d be accepting near-certain death in exchange for a small chance of liberation for a pack of wolves I don’t know.

Mom wouldn’t have wanted me to do that. She brought me away from all of this. She carried me to St. Louis so she could give me a safe, long life. I finally understand why she never told me anything. She didn’t want the slightest risk of me being tangled up in all of this.

Here I am, though, thoroughly tangled back in it. Fate has been cruel to her, or, worse, her own goddess schemed to bring me back into this world.
