“I tried to warn you,” Maggie says. “I told you your mother probably wouldn’t want you to stay in Springwater.”
“But if you’d told me the whole truth, you would have convinced me.”
“And what if you had been one of the other Springstorm shifters I’d helped escape? If I had told you, and I turned out to be wrong, someone Isaak Crowin could control would now know that the Springstorm Alpha is alive.” Okay. I guess that’s an alright point. “Besides,” Maggie adds, “Elana wouldn’t have wanted me to tell you.”
“Why not?”
“She wanted to protect you, from everything. She knew what the Bloodfangs would do to her pack, and to the humans around Springwater. She knew you were the only one who could take this land back from them. She chose not to tell you any of this, because she valued your safety above everything else, even her own people.”
Hearing it laid out like that, I can’t help but find a whole new appreciation for what she gave up in order to keep me safe.
