You know in zombie movies, one of the things I hated watching, is when some characters decide to be a hero. Even though they know the situation is dire, they would still go and rescue this stranger just because they wanted to.
And in turn, it either kills them or a companion is killed. Like why, they don't even get any benefit from rescuing the stranger? This trope led me to make the second rule: Don't be a Hero.
However, this rule is not absolute, exceptions are made. An exception is when we can gain something from it.
"Let's clear out the targets and get the school nurse," I said. In a survival situation, a medical expert is always needed. So saving the school nurse is a must in our immediate situation.
"Alright, I'll be the vanguard." Saeko nodded. She then gripped her bokuto tightly.
I nodded at her, she was more than enough to be a capable vanguard. I also tightly gripped my spear.
"Go"
She rushed out and started whacking the heads of the zombies. I was closely following her and killing any target that came close to her flanks. The zombies that were gathered in front of the school clinic started rushing at us.
*Thwack!* *Thwack!* *Thwack!*
*Swish!* *Swish!* *Swish!*
We fought our way through and killed dozens of them before clearing out this hallway. We then opened the clinic and saw a bitten student leaning on the wall.
I looked around and saw a dead zombie below his feet with a broken skull. It seems he managed to kill it but got bitten.
Saeko then approached the boy and lowered herself. She patted his shoulder and introduced herself.
"I'm the captain of the kendo club, Busujima Saeko. What's your name, second year?"
*Cough*
"Ishii...Kazu..."
"Ishii-kun, you did well protecting Marikawa-sensei. I admire your courage..." Saeko paused before continuing, "–but you know what happens to those who were bitten, don't you?"
"Would you like me to end your suffering? I haven't killed anyone yet but...I will help you."
"P...please...do it." The boy said with a smile.
But "yet" huh...I suppose it'll happen sooner or later. Seems like Saeko already accepted our new reality if she can say things like those.
"W-wait...! What are you—!" Marikawa-sensei, the school nurse tried stopping Saeko but I put my hand on her shoulder. She looked at me and I shook my head.
"He will soon turn into them, just let the guy go as a human." It may be hypocritical of me to say that, as someone who wants to survive by any means, but it's the best I can say in that situation, for me at least.
*Whack!*
"... Let's continue onwards," Saeko said. I can see her hands slightly trembling. She must still be in shock after killing a fellow human. It was her first time killing after all...but for me, it's not.
"Um...we should go to the faculty room," Marikwa-sensei said. "That's where the keys are kept."
Vehicles huh...on that topic I couldn't bring military vehicles to school otherwise it would have been the perfect escape vehicle. I should get them after we escape from here and also those "goods" back at the warehouse.
"Then let's proceed that way," I agreed with the suggestion, it's the best way to escape. "But before we go, I'm sorry in advance."
I lowered myself and grabbed Marikawa-sensei's skirt before ripping it at the side.
*Skrrrtt!*
"Ah—! This is a Prada!" She exclaimed.
"Is it more important than your life?" Saeko asked, realizing my intentions.
"It's equally important!"
"I'm sorry Marikawa-sensei but it'll only be a burden if I didn't do that," I explained before ignoring her. I walked out of the room and looked around, good, no zombies wandered up.
"Let's proceed to the faculty room then," I started walking. Glancing back, I saw Saeko and Marikawa-sensei following me. We walked carefully, and on the way, I tested some things.
Through the tests, I found out they react to sounds rather than sight so that's good. But then, when we were near the faculty room, we heard a scream in a nearby hallway. It seems to be coming from the hallway directly on the way to the faculty.
"Damn it, Saeko, Marikawa-sensei, let's hurry up." That scream must have attracted more zombies. If we don't hurry to the faculty room, we wouldn't be able to get out from there.
Right when we took a turn, we saw someone on the floor with a drill in her hands, killing a zombie by boring through its head. She was trembling after killing the zombie.
We also saw three other students with the girl on the floor. One of them was someone I know, a fellow I went with in gun training.
"Hirano," I nodded at him.
"Tenjou-senpai!"
"Aah, my clothes are stained. I'll need to have mama take them to the cleaners."
I heard some whimpering from the girl with the drill. She still must be in shock with what happened earlier. I then saw Saeko hugging her for comfort.
"We don't have much time for introductions," I said, garnering their attention. "We must leave this place quickly."
I walked toward the crying girl in Saeko's arms and looks like it will take time for her to recover. I then looked at Saeko, "I'll take it from here."
She nodded and I swiftly sweep her in a princess carry. This is the fastest way right now.
"Wah—! Let me go!" She struggled and accidentally hit my glasses off. And she also swept my hair wet from sweat to the side of my face.
"Stay still–!" I glared at her and she stopped moving. "Good, hm?" But why is her face reddening, is it from embarrassment?
And why are they looking at me with dumbfounded expressions and those two, why are your faces reddening as well?
I turned toward Saeko and saw her chuckling, "What is it?" I asked in confusion.
"Haha, nothing much. I've expected it to turn out this way when that hair covering your face was swept away," She replied.
Anyway, no sense in dwelling on that subject, our survival comes first.
"Let's go to the faculty room," I said before starting to walk. I heard footsteps behind me, good, they're following. This number should be enough for a basic group.
I observe them earlier and if they could survive the earlier chaos, then they are capable enough to adapt. More importantly, there is Hirano Kohta, he's good with guns.
With this thought in my mind, we proceeded to go toward the faculty room. When we arrived there, I put down this girl, Takagi Saya, as she introduced herself to be on the way. She also proclaimed herself as a genius but I just chuckled at that.
The others with me were, Komuro Takashi, a second year. There's also Miyamoto Rei with him, the same age as me and Saeko but got held back. And Marikawa Shizuka, the school nurse, and medic of this group. Lastly, I and Saeko, these are all the members of this ragtag group currently.
