Everyone was shocked to see Iris's defiant side and Cane was not an exception, even when his mind was not in the right headspace. 

This was the first time he received a 'no' from Iris so firmly. She tried her hardest to stand her ground and he could see how much she suppressed her fear when he defied him, even so, she was stubborn to back down and oblige him. 

Iris balled her fists, she waited for Cane's next respond or what he was going to say when she openly rejected his order in front of his people.

Other alpha would have beaten her to death if their woman was so much as making a refusal to a direct order, especially when it happened in front of the other pack member. It almost like a slap on the alpha's face for having someone challenging their command.
