"BEEEELLLA" A loud yell was heard coming from a cabin that had plants growing all over it. This yelling came from an old woman who was currently making breakfast. After that yell came, a thud came from upstairs, along with a small groan of pain.
With small shuffling footsteps from above, the old lady just smiled and shook her head.
"AAAAaaaaa" A small yawn came from an elven girl who was walking down the stairs. This girl had blonde unkempt hair, bright green eyes, a great figure, messy clothes that barely did anything to hide her curves, and bandages that wrapped around her neck, arms, and legs. This girl was of course Bella walking down the stairs, getting ready to eat.
As she was about to yawn again as she was still sleepy from constantly waking up at night due to nightmares. A ball of cold water landed on her face. Bella didn't even react to this, as this was already the 30th time this happened. Whenever she did something wrong or just seemed unfocused, or whenever Merry felt like it. A ball of cold water would always land on her face, no matter what she did to block it. Her entire week staying here was mostly the same.
She just sighed and sat down at the table. Merry just smiled and acted as if she had not just cast a cold [Water Ball] at her patient. Merry finished cooking and placed the food down.
"So, do you have any sort of pain coming from your body?" Merry ate her food and asked Bella a question.
"No Merry, I don't feel any pain coming from my body, other than being itchy. and nightmares." Bella continued and whispered the last piece to herself. Merry just hummed to Bella's answer and silence filled the cabin.
Once they were done eating, Bella started to clean the dishes while Merry went to the backyard, before saying "Once you are done, come to the backyard. We got to talk about your future."
Bella just hummed and continued washing, thinking about what would happen now that she's healed as now that she has no family to go to. She had already thought of some ideas on what to do once she was allowed to leave. Of course, her stay here wasn't free, but Merry will allow her to pay later on once she starts gaining money.
Bella finished and went to the backyard. The backyard was FILLED with plants, there were so many plants that she had watched her step so she wouldn't step on anything important. She once accidentally stepped on a firebell flower and that added an extra 5 silver coins to her debt, which now totaled 14 silver coins and 53 bronze coins. She of course was very livid because of that, as it will take a long time trying to gather that much.
She carefully walked through the garden and ended up by a pond. Inside the pond, there were several types of fish but she couldn't identify what species they were. And on the cobble path that led to this pond, the end of it ended at the entrance of a Gazebo.
Inside the Gazebo, Merry was sitting down, watching over the pond with a cup of tea in her hand.
"Come on now child, sit right here." The Gazebo only had 1 chair with a table in the middle of it. But all of sudden, with a wave of Merry's hand, another chair appeared. When this kind of scene happened, she was initially surprised but came over it as she knew that Merry had a space ring.
Bella sat down on the chair and saw an envelope slide across the table to her. The only thing Merry said was "Near the town hall, there is a small store called 'Old Roots' a friend of mine owns it. I want you to give this envelope and this ring to him. His name is Vulwin, once he reads this, he will give you several job choices. Now my child, go and get ready, I still need to prepare some items for him."
Bella listened carefully and grabbed the letter. Going back into the cabin to start preparing herself. She quickly got ready as she hardly had any clothes at all, only having 2 sets of clothes that Merry gave her, free of charge.
She headed downstairs and saw Merry waiting at the front door. Merry gave Bella a small hug and gave a golden ring to her, saying "Stay safe Bella, make sure to give this envelope and this ring to a man named Vulwin, ok"
"Yes Merry, I will give it to him" Bella just smiled and walked off into the forest, following a dirt path, and closely watched her environment as she was still paranoid. To get to Merry's house, you will need to walk into the forest while following a dirt path for around 10 minutes. This walk to the medium-sized town called Mosshorn, which was on the border of becoming a large town, was uneventful. Due to the town being close to the Elven border, there is a high density of soldiers and adventurers that patrol near the town and constantly cull the beast population.
She quickly spotted the high metal walls that kept the town safe and saw many people coming in and out. Luckily this town had no entrance fee as she currently has no money. She walked through the gates and saw many vendors, carriages, soldiers, merchants, and adventurers from all kinds of life walking all over the place. Once she finished admiring this scene as she had never seen a place so busy and bustling with elves, demi-humans, normal humans, and dwarfs before as she lived her entire life in a small village that used to have a population of around 50 elves. But it was now probably below 5.
She followed the main roads that led to the center of the town and saw a large manor and saw important looking people walk inside the manor. She asked a random passerby if they knew which direction the store was located. After asking for directions for a whole minute, she finally found where the store was located and proceeded to walk there.
She took her time as she marveled at this town. There were plants, banners, signs, and stands setup all over the streets. The buildings were mostly made up of stone and wood, while some more expensive-looking buildings appeared to be made of a material she did not know.
"Finally" Bella whispered to herself as she finally found a very old-looking building that had a sign called 'Old Roots'. This building had two large brownish window panes in front with a wooden door in the middle of the panes. Looking through the window, she saw wooden shelves filled with random items such as books, swords, rocks, crystals, and other miscellaneous items.
As she was examining the insides of the store, she heard an old man's voice behind her. "So are you just going to dirty my windows or are you going to buy something?" Bella shrieked and quickly jumped to the side as the old man suddenly appeared behind her, scaring her as she couldn't even detect him at all. The old man somehow crept up behind her without her hearing or sensing him.
"Sorry sir, I was looking for this building as I was sent by Merry." Bella answered the old man and bowed to him as she was always told to be respectful to her elders.
"Oh so has my flowers finally come" The old man only raised his eyebrows as his order finally came from that stingy old woman.
"I'm sorry sir but can I first get your name before I give you the items?" Bella first wanted to learn this old man's name as she doesn't want to give the order to the wrong person and only to have Merry add more to her debt.
"Ah sorry there. My name is Vulwin, Merry's husband. I believe that I'm expecting a ring and an envelope?" This old man was Vulwin and he was married to Merry. Once learning his identity, Bella grabbed the backpack Merry gave her and brought out both important items.
"Come inside child. I'll prepare some snacks for us while we discuss what we will do with you" Vulwin used a key, which appeared out of nowhere, and unlocked the door. Allowing fresh air to come inside and diffusing the musty smell of the building. Once Bella entered she constantly sneezed and coughed a lot as there was a very big build-up of dust everywhere.
Vulwin, seeing the state of his store, murmured something that Bella couldn't hear and made a twirling gesture with his hand. With his index finger making a twirling gesture, a small gust formed inside and only carried some dust outside the store. Leaving any unlucky person outside to deal with a small dust storm. Sadly it did happen, but to multiple people, as Vulwin store is located on a very busy street that constantly has people walking by.
Fortunately for Bella, the people couldn't tell what direction it came from. Unfortunately for the people, they couldn't tell what direction it came from. All trying to blame someone and starting a small scuffle which was quickly stopped by some nearby soldiers.
While this small commotion was happening outside. Vulwin was reading the letter and understood the task his wife gave him. Bella just sat down in silence while waiting for Vulwin to finish, eating some snacks that were offered to her.
"Alright now. Listen carefully. You can work here and I will give you a place to stay upstairs but I will only give you 8 bronze coins each day or I can sponsor you to become an adventurer. And don't worry, I have some connections that will allow you to take the test for free." Vulwin gave her two options to choose from. Working in his store or becoming an adventurer.
Both options had their pros and cons but.
Bella immediately chose to work in the store as she was not strong or knowledgeable about becoming an adventurer, even if she does easy tasks, there's always a chance of being in danger. She would prefer to stay in this building and work here forever as long as she can live upstairs. Although the pay is really bad, she can still survive with the small pay.
Once hearing Bella's choice and questions. Vulwin just said "Once you paid off your debt to my wife. You can continue working here and I'll increase your wage. The reason the pay is low is because I'm automatically going to take out money to pay off your debt. The money you earn is for yourself."
"Before you start working here. I just want you to give this ring to Merry. I need some extra items to include in my store. Just give this ring to her and she'll know what to do"
With her next task starting already. She said goodbye and went back to Merry's home. Not knowing several figures in cloaks were following her.
During her walk in the forest, carefully looking into the forest and glancing at any noise, not noticing 5 cloaked figures behind her. She saw a pair of adventurers walking in front of her, an elven girl and a man wearing a full set of armor that was almost all green, so she hid behind a tree. She first saw this pair come from the forest, talking about something.
But when they saw the path she was walking on, she heard the girl say "FINALLY, I wanna hot eat and rest", while she heard the man hum and say "I just need to wash my armor and I'll be happy." The girl just shook her head at the man and said "Don't you wish for more stuff, I mean you are strong enough to get more things and I'm sure you can become stronger."
Still walking down the path, about to pass her hiding spot. The man said "I'm happy even if I don't have many things. As long as I have my armor and weapon in hand to keep law and order, I'm satisfied."
The girl stopped and looked at the man, thinking about something. As she was about to say something, the man hugged her while groans of pain escaped from his mouth. The girl quickly grabbed something from the man's hand and started to chant a spell. But as she was casting a spell, several more daggers came out from the surroundings, all trying to make their marks on both targets.
Luckily the girl was able to finish casting the spell. Making a blue sphere that covered her and the hurt man who had 5 daggers piercing his armor. Although the girl was able to make a blue barrier, blocking a dozen incoming daggers, more came this time with a black aura surrounding each of the daggers.
The daggers that the black aura struck the barrier hard, causing cracks to form all around the barrier.
As the girl was concentrating on the barrier, continuously pouring mana in the barrier, five cloaked figures appeared and surrounded the barrier. However, one cloak figure was carrying Bella, who was tied up with a gag in her mouth and tears coming down her eyes.
The cloak man who was carrying Bella told the others "Kill the man and keep the girl, these two should fetch a hefty sum, especially the one I'm carrying, I'm sure some nobles will pay some gold coins for her."
The other cloaked figures just nodded and threw out more daggers covered in a black aura. As more and more daggers came from the cloak men, more cracks began to form everywhere. This was until the man ordered everyone to stop seeing that they weren't able to break the barrier as the cracks kept getting repaired.
The man saw the shiny crystal that the girl was using to repair the barrier. Greed formed in his eyes as he saw it, thinking about the things he could do with it as he thought it was a powerful beast core since mana kept pouring out of the crystal.
The man brought out a thin rapier and made a stance. Soon a black aura formed around the rapier, becoming more and more dense. The man stayed in this stance and charged his attack for 15 seconds, causing the other cloaked men to move back.
[Dark thrust] The man murmured this and thrust his rapier, easily piercing the barrier and making its way to the man down on the floor, slowly bleeding to death
