CHAPTER 139

290 AC

POV MC

After suppressing House Myre, we turned our sight to the Ten Towers seat of Harlaws. After suppressing 3 out of 5 houses on the island, we didn't need to fight The Stonetrees. Now all we have to do is beat Harlaws, which will mark this island's end, and we can move on to Pyke.

Lord Stark again used 2 thousand men to create a wall against a possible Stonetree incursion. Harlaws still had 4 thousand men inside their castle against our 17 thousand, but more than half of their men were made out of levies like their thralls. The village next to Ten Tower was abandoned; they must have retreated into the castle. Ten Towers was a big castle deserving of a house that could stand up to Greyjoys.

Ten Towers, like Casterly Rock, was a castle built on the edge of high cliffs, of course not as high and large as Casterly Rock, but it was still a magnificent castle. The only thing I didn't like was the castle looked as if someone else had built each tower. The design of each tower was different from the other.

Some were short and fat, while others were high and thin. One of them had a steep conical roof like the tip of a lance. Even the color of the towers was different. This castle was the newest one in the Iron Islands. Theomore Harlaw raised Ten Towers a few hundred years ago after three of his sons died, and he blamed the dampness of Harlaw Hall, the ancient seat of Harlaws. Between the mismatched towers were many walks and bridges.

According to what I read about this place, the fattest tower should be the tower of Rodrik Harlaw, "The Reader." Unlike many of his kind, he was educated and had a vast library in his tower. Lord Harlaw had lost both of his sons in the Fair Island battle and declared his cousin Harras Harlaw "The Knight," as his heir and gifted him with Nightfall, the ancestral Valyrian blade of House Harlaw.

There were very few knights among Drown God's followers because they were generally dishonorable and indecent raiders, but House Harlaw was trying to distance themselves from the old ways of the Iron Islands, which is why they tried to raise their sons as knights.

While Harras wasn't as good a fighter as Victarion, he was certainly skilled, but I cannot charge in there while they have a Valyrian steel sword. I was not going to lose another of my familiars to those cursed swords. I have to find a way to pull Harras out of the castle before the battle starts. After thinking for a while, I remembered some of the medieval movies I watched when I was on Earth. This might work, but even if it did not, I didn't have anything to lose by trying.

...

I came into Lord Stark's tent, and like always; he was buried inside a lot of maps trying to come up with better plans even when everything was decided. He had already told everyone what to do.

"My lord, I have something to tell you."

He lifted his head and looked at me with tired eyes.

"My lord, please don't order an attack when I destroy the gate."

"Why is that?"

"I need to pull Harras Harlaw to a duel."

He looked at me with a confused expression on his face that said I don't understand what you mean.

"I have to neutralize their Valyrian sword."

I put my hand on my sword and said,

"Can I."

Asked permission to pull my sword.

"I already know you can kill me without it; why would I mind when you pull your sword? I already know you would never use your sword to kill me. You would most likely use your snake or make me fall from high places as you did to the Drumms."

"My lord, I don't know what you are talking about."

"Ohh, please, I don't believe even for a second that they died of natural causes."

"Even if what you say is right, They were slavers and raiders. They got what they deserved. I would like to give it to them face to face, but honorable Lord Royce forced my hand. Anyway..."

I pulled my sword and cast Quersumby ( oakshield ) on my arm. A bark-like armor encased my arm then I brought the blade close to my body. When the sword touched the bark armor, the magical armor started to turn into dust.

"Valyrian swords are magical; everyone knows that: a sword that can always stay sharp and almost weightless, but what people don't know is it can break any spell below level 4 and make the holder immune to level 3 or below spells. I don't want a weapon like that in the hands of our enemies."

"Why are you telling me this?"

"I trust you, and I have already mastered many level 4 spells."

"Are you sure you can beat him?"

"I am sure I can beat him in a duel and kill him, which will boost our men's morale while demoralizing the enemy."

"Okay, if you can kill one of their prominent fighters, it will affect the battle.

...

I have been in many battles since Bear Island, and countless people have died at my hands. Some were killed by the Druid, and some by Ser Drasil, but always the magic was a part of it. I either burned them under raging flames or used more subtle methods when I was Ser Drasil, like moving the soil under their foot or creating small dips in the places they would be stepping, and using the subtle method is harder than using raging flames. I need more control over my magic, and thanks to my x5 skill, I got so much better. It doesn't feel like I will level up, but I feel so much more in control.

That may be why my mana reserve got bigger, and I got a few new spells after the battle against the Myres. Now I had 370 mana. One of the reasons why I was so sure of myself that I could beat him was because of my new spells. Rhovagon grēze (Bark armor) was a more powerful version of oakshield, I tested it on some animals, and Red Rain could not dispel the armor, but it could penetrate it .when buffed, Harlik hit it twice, and he managed to cut through it on his second hit. So, it was good for one hit against someone with 13 str.

I was starting to harness the power of the stars. Qēlostabula ( star map) was basically a biological GPS. As long as I am able to see the stars or the sky, it doesn't matter if it is cloudy or not. I could tell which way was other places or how much distance was between us, but it only worked for places my familiars or I was before.

Qēlos Perzys (Star Fire) was an attack spell; I condensed a celestial light, and a beam of white light burned my target to ash. jelmio egros (wind blade), and this spell was my most powerful single-target attack.

Abrarflamen (Life Blast) was a 30-meter radius aoe buff spell that created a wave of divine light energy to burst from me. This light blesses anyone I saw as a friend; it boosts their morel and stamina and then provides a minor heal to them.

Kelio rugiet (Lion's roar) was a spell I always wanted. I wasted so much mana and died so many times to create this one. I don't remember how many times I exploded my throat to create this spell while I was training inside the space. It boosts my voice more than a megaphone would and imbues it with mana. It affects a 30-meter radius or 60-meter cone. It either boosts morale and creates a minor fear debuff on enemies.
