Courtney takes a seat on the sofa. I go straight to the bar and pour myself two fingers of whiskey and water for her. After I hand her the water, I remain standing several feet away. Instead of joining her on the sofa, I perch at the edge of my desk. I intend to keep as much distance between us as possible. I need to get to the bottom of this. I'm in control, not her.

"So you're saying I might be the father? How many men exactly are on the list?"

"What are you talking about? Of course, it's yours." She swallows. "It has to be."

I scoff. "That's not an answer, Courtney. I used protection and you said you were on the pill." I always use a condom. Always. That's non-negotiable. "Unless you lied about that."

She blinks, drinks half of her water, and refuses to look at me. "I…"
