We tried admirably to stay awake the rest of the day, despite the lingering effects of an utter lack of sleep kicking harder the more the hours drug on.

Even so, Ellis and I seemed to be of one mind that being with the kids was more important. Hearing Hope laugh could cure almost any bad or depressed mood, and I wouldn’t have missed what Kevin had said for anything.

I’d always tried to be his mom, even if he didn’t see me that way, but it was a relief and a joy to know that he did. I was tempted, just for a moment, to ask if he might like to call me Mom but didn’t want to push it.

He would get there in his own time if he ever did. For the time being I was more than happy for him to call me ‘Liv.’
