Something switched while watching Ellis drive away. At least he’d had the guts to do it to my face. Not the dirty stunt he’d pulled before he left for Mexico.

The sweet, innocent girl was completely gone, leaving a neutral void that the demons I fought in my head were threatening to fill. I fought the urge to let the anger overwhelm me.

Hope moved my heart as she laughed at a passing butterfly, distracting my attention from the rage and the pain, at least for the moment.

I would never again be how I had been before the kidnapping. That part of me was gone forever. There was a chance to do it again. Build a new me up from the ground with what I had left. I just had to resist the temptation to do what would be easy, ending up no better than Bethany.
