The tavern was mostly empty, except for a table that held about three gentlemen. Mauve wasn't sure and she wasn't about to look in that direction.
Taverns like this give her jitters and there was nothing more nerve-racking than hostile-looking fellas sitting in the corner as if looking for trouble.
She unwittingly moved closer to Galath even though there was no reason to be concerned. She couldn't help it.
"Right this way," the older woman said. Her back was slightly bent and she rested a hand on the small of her back.
She led them towards the corner that had stairs sticking out of it. The stairs looked sturdy and were a bit curved. Mauve realized she could see the open door at the top of the stairs but she couldn't see what the door held.
The old lady walked faster than Mauve thought she could, leading her and Galath up the stairs. Mauve had to pick up the pace to keep up with the old lady.
