His thoughts, actions, and behaviour were so unpredictable that it was difficult to fathom. Even though, before this, he was the one most interested in discovering Batman's true identity in all of Gotham.
For this purpose, he even committed a series of heinous crimes. Frankly, despite his previous confrontations with Batman, Joker had the upper hand and even won quite impressively.
But in the end, he failed to achieve his goal - to unveil Batman's true face.
