บท 17: Ink of Innovation

Walking into my bedroom feels odd. This is probably the first time since enrollment that I don't come home to a book waiting for me. When I finally arrive inside my room I try to clean everything off my desk in case another explosion happens. Looking back after hearing what the Librarian and student said about the spell backfiring, it still does not make any sense. How can an explosion that's close enough to hit the library but not close enough to harm all the other books, cause the book in my hand to explode? The only thing that I could think of is this pen....just how old is this son of bitch? The Librarian said it was as old as the Ancient One but this does not look like any pen past the 19th century at least I don't think so. Fuck I knew I should've worked on something that can charge my computer because I'm pretty sure fountain pens are less than two hundred years old. And feeling the design of this item, it certainly feels old. Maybe it's only several decades old but if the claim is true then it very well could be several hundred of years old. Well I suppose there's really only one person I can ask about the truth. For now I should try and mess with it.

I carefully pick up the relic to begin examining the exterior of the object. It looks exactly like your typical luxury foundation pen that are inferior to the cheap ballpoint pens. I mean a pen is a pen, why would anyone pay more than ten dollars on them? But nevermind that. The head of the pen, or I suppose I should say, the nib of the pen is a thin sheet of metal that looks like silver. But it can't be silver because there's no way for it to keep it's shine if no one has given a fuck about it for the last hundred years. So the only other material that I can think of is....well if it's fucking vibranium then I would shit my pants. But the only other material that I can think of is platinum. For why anyone would use such precious material for a pen is beyond me. The main body of the writing utensil is curvy but not smooth. It feels like it's not made of one long solid material. These bumbs and lines that flow around it...are these magic runes? And the cap...there is no cap. Just a sharp metallic head of a pen that almost eradicated the next generation of Xu. What kind of pen doesn't have a cap to keep the tip clean?

But this is not just a pen though Ned. It's also a relic. Something that might allow you to finally use magic! I clap my hands against my face as I try to think through the enigma that's sitting in front of me. First of all why would anyone create a relic as a pen? Most relics have a use and a purpose in spell creation or combat advantages. But a fucking pen? What the hell is this Samurai Sentai Shinkenger? SIGH. Well beggars can't be choosers and from what I've heard, the relic chooses its user and not the other way around....but did it have to choose me in the way it did? Huuuhh. Fuck it motherfucker since you wanted me to be your master let me see what kind of shit you can do!

I take out a piece of paper from nearby and begin to try writing anything out....it has no ink. Of fucking course it has no ink. It's been sitting on a shelf for centuries with no one taking care of it. Why would it have any ink? I being fondling with the pen, it turns out that these weird bumbs and lines can turn. Humph. I wonder if there's any way I can put ink in here. I should probab-CLICK! Ouch! The pen in my hand suddenly opens a slit along the side of the chamber. Sticking out of the slit is a tiny rod that just pricked my finger. Suddenly an orange glow begins to shine through the carvings of the pen. It pulses slowly as the orange fades into a yellow glow before a sudden sharp piercing pain rings through my head causing me to drop the relic and back away. "AHHH!" I cover my ears and head as if it could do anything to this pain. It feels like thousands of needles are tattooing my brain as a single thought appears in my minds eye. "Ink of Innovation" With that appearing in my head the pain starts to fade away.

"Is...is that what your name is?" I try to speak out to the relic but it response back with silence. I hesitatingly reach out for it with my hands trembling slightly from the unexpected drawing of blood. Once I picked up the pen in my hand it feels like nothing had changed. Actually no something did change. This pen now feels like it fits perfectly in my hand as if it's the perfect writing utensil and was made specifically for me. I bring the paper closer to me as I try to write out something....mhmm I don't know what I was expecting. Before it pricked me it didn't have any ink, now it still doesn't have anything ink. Well I suppose there's nothing else I can do until I get ink for it. I take a deep breath and look at the pen in my hand before getting up. I walk out of my room and head towards the common area that's still full of activity. I start looking for one particular individual that I know will always be here to try and practice their calligraphy during the setting sun.

"Big brother Wong, can I bother you for a second?" I call out to him from behind. Without any hesitation and in a very smooth motion, he lifts up the brush from the paper to set it away without spilling a drop of ink. "Ned, I've been wondering when our next meeting would be. What can I do to help you ever growing curiosity about the mystic arts?" He turns around to face me. "Is there any chance you can help me with get some ink for a pen? I just received a relic this evening and I think it requires some ink to work." I give him a smile before extending my hand over to hand him my new toy. "Ah so you're the one to finally receive this." He accepts the object and begins to exam it. "You know you just might be the first student we have here in over a hundred years to finally receive this item. I remember when I first started here and this object grabbed my attention. Unfortunately I was not destined for the relic as it did not choose me." He hands me back my pen before turning around to focus on his brush set. He waves his fingers in the air around the ink container as the ink water thickens before balling up into the air. Wong produces a glass vial in his hands before calling the ball of ink into the vial. A smile spreads on his face as he hands me the bottle that's now holding a thick slurry of ink.

"Much appreciated big brother." I smile back and accepts the object before heading towards my room. Walking away from the common area I felt a subtle itch of curiosity calling my name and pulling me towards the direction of the Ancient One. Maybe it's a mind trick or maybe it's just a part of the plot and a way to thicken the word count but I soon found myself in front of the Ancient One's room. I place my knuckle on the wood of the door, ready to knock but I can't help myself from backing away and pacing from side to side. Oh but what would I even say? Do I just ask for help? Ask if she can tell me about the pen? What if she's too bus-

AHEM.

A familiar tone rings in my ear as I turn to look behind me. "I see you're doing rather well Ned. How may I of help today?" The warm smile of a teacher ready to guide their student spreads across her lips as our eyes make contact. "Greetings Ancient One." I quickly bow before looking back up at her. "This evening I came upon a relic and I was wondering if you can help me learn about this thing." I pull out the pen that was tucked under my robe to show her. "Oh I see. So, the pen has finally chosen a user after all this time..." She gestures with her fingers to make the pen float towards her hand but finds that it's refusing to follow her command. Instead of floating up and hovering towards her, the pen remains still in my hand while pulsing a faint orange glow throughout the lines and ruins of its body. "Uh...do most relics do something like that, Ancient One?" I can see the pen is withstanding against the command of the sorcerer supreme with ease. But it feels more than just resisting. For some reason it feels like the pen is absorbing the magic energy that the Ancient One is using.

"No...usually most relics have a minor will of their own. The strength and intelligence of said will can be based on the creator of the relic, how powerful the spell contained within it and the material the relic is made from. However no new age relic on earth has been as stubborn as that pen of yours for a long long time." She smiles before ending her telekinesis. "Come inside Ned. I have something I must give to whomever welds the pen. It's what I promised my disciple when he forged the pen and left it here in the care of Kamar-Taj." With a wave of her hand she opens the door to her studies. I can't help but nod as I step inside.

Once the two of us settled down in the room, my mind began to run wild with ideas. Oh fuck I really hope this doesn't turn into some shota shit... actually not really, I kind of do. Hehe. "So what have you learned so far from the relic yourself?" The Ancient One walks over to the desk with an old metallic box. It seems to be made of very precious metal yet it's also durable to withstand the test of time with very little damage. "Uhmm well, so fair I only know about it's name. It's called the 'Ink of Innovation' but yet it's a pen without any ink." I crack as smile as the Ancient One let's out a soft chuckle. "Oh you're such a precious little scholar. I can see why the relic has chosen you. You and the creator of the relic have a very similar way of looking at the world even though you're both more than 400 years apart." She sets the box down on the desk before sliding it towards me. "What is this?" I reach out to grab the box...it's not a box. At first I thought it was a box but now it's crystal clear. "This...is this real?" I look up at the Ancient One as a smile slowly spreads across her lips. She did not have to say anything else for me to understand whoes the original owner of the pen.

"B-but how? How can something like this exist?" I place my hands on my head to try and prevent my brain from splattering everywhere. "How can it not? This world is an old and mystical place. I have seen civilizations rise and fall. And from those ashes, new societies and cultures redeveloping to be come something new and more than their predecessors. The world that you know with is simply a blink in my existence. And my existence is even less than a small fraction of a blink for our universe." She pauses to allow me to try and gather my gray matter that had been flung everywhere. After taking a few moments to reboot my system, I start to blink at her as I try compose myself and contain my excitement. "Seeing your reaction to discovering whoes legacy and work you'll be inheriting is very reassuring. I have high hopes that this crossing of fates will allow you to soar high and far." She give me one last smiple smile before creating a portal and sending me through into my room. Fuck I don't even care if that was a little rude of her. I NOW HAVE A METHOD TO HOPEFULLY LEARN MAGIC! I rush over to my desk begin trying to open the metal volume. I slowly rub my fingers over the beautiful metal work of the title of the volume 'Gimorio Da Vinci'
