“You stay here,” Vix said to Mirra. “We’ll be back soon.”
Mirra pulled away, her eyes glistening. “I feel like a coward, staying behind.”
“This isn’t your fight,” Caine said.
“Yes, but...” Mirra blanched. “Oh, I wish I knew what to do.”
Vix’s heart went out to the young woman. “You’ve done enough,” she said, pulling Mirra close and stroking her hair. “We’ll figure everything out when we get back, okay?”
Mirra sniffled. “Okay,” she said, attempting a watery smile.
Caine gave her a quick hug. “Stay safe.”
“And you two, too,” Mirra said.
Vix smiled at her. “Promise.”
Mirra gave them one last tearful wave as Vix and Caine left the room. Vix was glad to see that the others from the Hidden Court had gone on without them. She and Caine walked along in silence.
“I can’t believe Mirra thought we were going to...” Caine shivered. “I can’t blame her for being upset.”
Vix nodded.
“What is it?” Caine asked, glancing at her.
