Vix was stunned. “But you put Caine through those experiments!” she said, recovering some of her anger. “Why do that if you weren’t working with the Al’Vidar?”
“Because we were trying to find another way to release those souls from Caine.” She turned her attention to him. “From you, I should say. Unlike the Illumines, we aren’t interested in bashing our head against the same wall, again and again, to fix our mistakes.”
Caine’s face twisted in disbelief. “But he did kill me!” he said, jerking his head toward Sharpe. “Again and again, in those fighting pits of his!”
“That was his business,” Melina said. “Back then, Sharpe was not fully with us or against us. I'm hardly surprised he thought he'd try to profit from you on his own before joining our cause."
