บท 20: Twenty: Present
Wong, Jim, and Dalgoring thanked Tuban and Doolabin for their help, as well as their hospitality and were about to leave when Yarre broke into Tuban's home and glared at them all. She saw Coolyala in Wong's arms, saw Jim and Dalgoring prepared to fight; knives out and postures bent to lunge. She met her eyes to Tuban's and made the latter female shrink back in fear. However, Yarre ignored Tuban for the moment and looked to Wong. "Yala no escape Yarre. Outsiders tresspass Yarre home. Why? Yala want stone, try steal stone. Yala no escape."
"She is trying to protect all of us!" Dalgoring growled.
Yarre laughed. "Yala destroy worlds. Yala naïve. Give Yala Yarre, outsiders may leave. No give, no leave."
"Have you learned nothing from what you've heard?" Jin asked. "Do you not know it is Ohuo who wish you harm?"
Yarre waved away his questions. "Tuban, take Yala home. Stay until Yarre come."
Tuban, tears in her eyes, stepped towards Wong, arms outstretched. Wong pulled back. "Please," Tuban pleaded.
"I thought she was your friend!" Dalgoring hissed to her.
"Friend, yes. Yarre ruler. Tuban obey, friend or no."
"Give Yala Tuban willingly," Yarre warned.
Under his breath, Jin began to chant something the Irnus could not decipher. Wong and Dalgoring heard and understood, but kept eyes on the Irnus. Tuban glanced from Wong to Yarre, eyes pleading with them both to let her be, for either to understand or to let her escape. But Yarre would not do either because she was ruler and her prisoner was about to escape and she wanted Tuban to grab her. It was punishment for helping Coolyala. It was painful for Tuban.
Everyone had forgotten Doolabin, who was behind Wong and Tuban. He was mixing something in a bowl, crushing herbs, adding liquids, and muttering. After much hurried actions from him during the standoff, a glow began to emigrate from the mixture, as well as a sickly sweet scent. He splashed it onto the wall behind him, his chant ending as the glow turned the wall into a portal. Tuban caught the scent and looked towards him, surprise and delight showing on her face so that Doolabin knew she was happy, which is what he lived for.
"Friends!" he called. Everyone turned and Wong cursed. "Go!"
"No!" Yarre screamed, making the world shake in her fury. Wong jumped into the portal, Jin and Dalgoring on his heels after holding off Yarre. Doolabin said something under his breath, and the portal closed, leaving Uarre slamming into a wall.
Tuban ran to him and started to push him out the front door. "Go! Run! No come back! No find Tuban! Be free, Doolabin!"
But Doolabin spun and clasped Tuban's face, all her eyes welling with tears, all her body shaking with fear. "Tuban come."
Tuban shook her head. "Doolabin go now. Tuban cannot. Tuban stay must. Doolabin stay cannot. Doolabin go now. Safe away. Please!"
"Doolabin Tuban love."
More tear spilled down Tuban's face until her world was blurry. "Tuban Doolabin love. Go. No come back. No Tuban save. Doolabin live safe."
They touched foreheads, touched noses, their species way of affection. Then, Doolabin ran into the safety of the woods. He didn't go far though, but turned and watched as Yarre's guards appeared out of nowhere and began to beat Tuban until her green blood was pooling below her on the ground as two guards held her up by her arms. Yarre came out then, her eyes ablaze with rage and hatred. Doolabin heard his ruler's words as she ordered ten guards to search for Doolabin. They took off. Doolabin wasn't worried though.
But her words to Tuban did worry him. "Tuban traitor. Tuban no honor! Tuban Ravless!"
Ravless…
Dead or to be dead. Heartless.
Ravless… It meant Yarre would keep Tuban imprisoned for as long as it took for her to find Doolabin, Yala and Yala's friends. And when they were all captured, Yarre would put them in a cage with Zunquk…sickly creatures with claws and teeth that spurt deadly poisons. Yarre used them on her most wanted prisoners
Doolabin hoped for their best, wherever they were. He could not help Yala, but maybe he could help his Tuban.
