บท 5: A little close up

The city of Beach City was common. Having a quite beautiful beach, it was normal to be full of tourists and surfers in summer. But in winter, only fishermen visited her. Attractions included the theater, Funland amusement park, the lighthouse, and The Crab Shack.

There is not much to say about the people. They seem boring, simple and even a little strange.

Years have passed since the attacks that terrified the world.

Sophocles, who had awakened, was at the gates of the city. After starting phase 2, he had quietly subdued the Russian government, the Chinese government, the British government, and the American government. It all happened like a thief breaking in at night.

He replaced the heads of power with doubles, and little by little his influence expanded. Even his fearsome intelligence and security agencies suffered the same fate, let alone his armies.

Also, he took power from the news, Hollywood, Bollywood, and whatever media was useful to him. While he was away from it, his armed force increased to millions.

And his elite soldiers were now capable of taking on a thousand men each. His body had been perfected.

He was no longer human. He had lost his emotions at the cost of his transformation. He too would be unable to reproduce. However, none of that mattered to him.

Once he woke up, after reviewing the accumulated reports and putting things in order, he was stunned by the information that Ricardito had brought him. When they had seized the power of the world's intelligence agencies, he was surprised to see a new piece of information.

There was a group of aliens still alive on earth. Who collaborated with humanity for millennia. His hunger for power awoke again. A strong desire forced him to take charge of this matter.

He personally went to this city. He wanted to see them with his own eyes. Know what the difference in power was between him and them, and understand the true threat they represented.

Sophocles, who now had a different face and body, went to the most logical place. The tourism office.

Right now, he was going under the identity of Clarence Lame. A twenty-nine year old Caucasian. His face was riddled with acne, dark circles under his eyes, thick high-magnification glasses and hair like a nest of magpies.

A little stooped, sandals with socks and a Hawaiian shirt. At first glance, he seemed like someone too fake. But sometimes the dumbest, most absurd costume was the best one to hide in.

Even more so in a country like the United States. Where everyone strives to be perfect and smiling in appearance.

Furthermore, at first glance a normal person would dismiss this individual as a suspect. Because of course, with his anatomical distribution, his way of speaking and behavior made him harmless.

More than harmful, a nuisance at times. And insects are always left alone.

At the tourist office they indicated the nearest hotel. He paid for a taxi and took his bags up.

Once he "woke up", after reviewing the accumulated reports and putting things in order, he was stunned by the information that Ricardito had brought him. When they had seized the power of the world's intelligence agencies, he was surprised to see a new piece of information.

More than harmful, a nuisance at times. And insects are always left alone.

At the tourist office they told him where he could rent a house. He paid for a taxi and went home.

It was a two-story house, normal size. A dry, neglected patio with cracked flagstones and rusty railings. It was missing a coat of paint. The garage was full of dust and cobwebs.

On the first floor was the kitchen and living room. On the second floor was the bedroom and bathroom.

He unpacked his bags which consisted of various books, tools, a pocket watch and a violin. She didn't even pack clothes, as he figured it would be better to get them here.

Along the way, he could get acquainted with the locals. He went to the carpentry shop in town and bought a desk, a bookcase, a cupboard, and several bookcases. A team of men would carry his purchases in the afternoon. In the meantime, he went to the glassware store to buy several different sized terrariums, which would also be brought out in the afternoon.

Afterwards, he went to the pharmacy to purchase various chemicals needed to maintain specimens, and further declare himself as an entomologist in the city.

Since it was already noon, he went to buy fast food. Although he didn't need to eat to live, it was necessary to maintain the facade of him.

He then stopped by various clothing stores to buy his outfits for the week. And finally, he went to buy various musical instruments, especially stringed ones.

His false background described him as a famous entomologist who had won various awards, including money, and recognition for his research work. Especially in his work for the creation of a new variant of bees that can survive in all kinds of conditions. He was called the "Cockroach Bee" because he was nearly immortal.

This improved the ecosystem and helped reduce pollution.

It would be strange, that being extremely rich does not show his status in society. Considering that he is taken as eccentric among his homogeneity.

According to his spies, the target of greatest interest wasn't even in the city per se. But, he lived very close to the beach. Almost inside of it.

The individual of interest called himself Steven Universe. Son of Gregory Demayo, later changed to Greg Universe, and Rose Quartz. His father had been born in West Keystone County until he dropped out of school and became a failed rock star.

He would then live in a van, where he would travel across the country until he reached Beach City. Where he would meet his future wife and set up a car wash to support his family.

Nothing is known about Rose Quartz. She appeared out of nowhere in the city, but she adapted quite well to its inhabitants.

They built a beach house under a gigantic woman-like structure, under a big hill.

However, after giving birth to his son Steven, Rose died. For some reason, perhaps due to the birth of his child, he fell into bad terms with his wife's subordinates.

Because of this, he was forced to return to live in his van, parked at the car wash. Since then, he was quite absent in the education of his son, visiting him often. However, Steven's total upbringing and education was handled by subordinates of his wife.

Some clarifications mention that the huge structure gives high energy and radioactive signals. Reason why it is almost impossible to observe it through satellites.

Also, due to Rose's presence, a large number of creatures began to appear in and around the city. Similar to the centipede he found in the Amazon, they were composed mostly of gems and minerals.

They not only appeared on land, but in water. For this reason, Beach City had the lowest fish index number in the entire country. And for some reason, until Sophocles took over, it was ignored by the security and scientific community.

In any case, it would be very difficult to access this structure. Much less try to study its inhabitants without raising suspicion.

He went back to buy things until it was five in the afternoon. He went back to his house and ordered his purchases. When he finished ordering everything, it was time for dinner.

He went out to buy fast food again, but this time he brought with him a folding chair, a trumpet, and a notebook.

Patience. That is the key to get all things in this world. It took me to the top of Athens and now to the top of the world. But something is still missing. Knowing that aliens existed was the motivation I needed.

Sitting on the grass, near the car wash. There I started to eat my dinner, but left it half eaten due to loss of interest.

And I started playing. Even though I have no emotions, I can still copy various trains of thought from my subordinates. I have several files of them, which I can use to mimic "humanity".

One of them was a romantic musician, the template I almost always use at times like this. This night was ideal to accompany the waves with the trumpet.

My actions were timed to Greg's and his son's pattern of behavior. Every night of the full moon, when the tide is high, they would have a barbecue in the car wash.

Sometimes, they would invite the "gems" (as Steven called them), and they would all eat. Greg would do this as a way to make up for a mistake he thinks he made with them, especially the one they call Pearl.

I did not bring any stringed instruments because the effect would not be effective. And among the wind ones, they all lacked presence. The percussion ones are left out of the list for obvious reasons, and of all the brass ones were the best option.

The saxophone was pretty good too, but, he would paint him as brooding and sensitive. The trumpet, on the other hand, was better suited to a night like this.

Tap Fly me to the Moon. I got up from my chair and started dancing as the song progressed. My targets started showing up, bringing all the stuff for the event.

I noticed out of the corner of my eye how Pearl tensed in my presence. Steven, you seemed to enjoy my presentation.

Since they saw that it was not "dangerous", they continued with their business. The song ended and I took a sip of my drink, then pulled out my notebook and flipped through its pages. I was looking for the next song, which I hope will be just as effective.

What a wonderful world was my next choice. Amethyst, the purple gem, seemed to enjoy the song, because she kept dancing as she put the dishes on the table.

Greg enjoyed the music, and he seemed to remember the good old days. He lit the grill and grilled the meat. However, since they had almost finished their preparations, Perla approached me to "invite" me to leave.

─Could you leave? Can't you see that we are about to have a social gathering and enjoy the food. We have our own music player and we would really mind having you next to us.

─I'm sorry, it seems I was a nuisance. However, your bad manners speak volumes about you, miss. Let me correct you, whenever you meet someone for the first time, you both introduce yourself─Although my character was a "failure", he wasn't stupid. Responding sarcastically seems ideal on this occasion. My name is Clarence Lame, and I'm just here to enjoy a night out in public. Also, looking at your companions, I don't seem to be a bother at all.

Pearl was irritated. But she knew how to control herself and recover her coldness.

─I'm sorry. You're right. I was rude and my manners left a lot to be desired. However, we are really trying to enjoy a nice night. And while my classmates don't seem upset, I'm afraid your behavior will upset little Steven.

─I don't mind, Pearl. What's more, Mr. Clarence, you play the trumpet quite well. I've never felt so much emotion in a song. Dad, could Mr. Clarence stay for lunch with us?

"I'm not sure Steve. If Mr. Clarence has time available, then I don't see the problem.

─ Thank you very much for inviting me. I promise not to be a bother. By the way, while I've introduced myself before, let me re-introduce myself. I'm Clarence Lame, music and nature lover.

─My name is Steven Universe! And this is my dad Greg, and he makes the best barbecue in the world. She is Perla, she likes ballet and French movies. Over there is Amethyst, the group's comedian and wrestling fanatic. Finally, she is Garnet. She is very cool.

I laughed, according to protocol. I accompanied the Universe that night, and I was able to find out several things. For starters, if I were to face all three gems at the same time I wouldn't have a chance.

Whereas I don't know their abilities or behavior patterns. In addition, I discovered that these aliens do produce waves of electrical energy when they experience any stimulus. Such as listening to Steven sing or eating the food. That is, they have a kind of nervous system.

That 's not all. On one occasion, I dropped my fork to place a tracer on Steven's body. In this way, you could know which areas of the structure emit more energy.

Based on the outcome of the meeting, they still distrust me but don't consider me a threat. I hope their opinion of me improves over the next few months.
